Kindergarten Newsletter Room 1 January 11, 2016 Mrs. Dowdell and Mrs. Copani Ed Smith Vision Statement : To be the most improved school in the district where every child learns and grows. , Classroom News Last week was a busy week! We had fun reviewing skills we have been working on all year. We learned how to use a balance scale and weigh things. In ELA Language and Learning we have started a new unit on Native Americans. We are learning about 3 different North American tribes; how they lived, what they ate and some of their customs. Last week we started naming the alphabet letters. Your child should know all letter sounds and names by the end of January. We are sending home a paper for your child to write a few sentences on by trying to sound out words. We are also sending home a yellow paper with the mixed up alphabet on it (Alphabet Dash). We would like you to have your child practice the alphabet dash each night using this paper. They should go across the paper, pointing at each letter and say it’s sound the first time through. The second time through they should name the letter name. See if he/she can get faster each day. Monday there will be no school due to the birthday observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We have been learning about Dr. King in school. We are learning that Dr. M.L. King, Jr. encouraged people to solve problems by using their words to talk things through. He encouraged us to be kind to each other and not to judge each other by the way we look on the outside. Reminders Thank you to all of the families who did their snowperson project! They look awesome! If you have not made your’s yet, please do so ASAP! We’d love to have 100% participation! Please read to, count orally to 100, practice the alphabet dash (once with letter names and once with letter sounds- see Classroom News section) and number recognition to 20 daily! Practicing builds fluency in both reading and math! No School next Monday (Jan. 18) – Dr. M.L. King, Jr. Birthday Observance. This Week’s Specials Monday – art Tuesday – music Wednesday – library Thursday – gym Friday – music Standards In addition to the standards that we have been working on so far this year, students are now working on counting “how many in a set (group)” and writing numbers up to 20. They should be able to count items and write numbers accurately at least to 20. They are working on orally counting forward from any given number to at least 20. We are practicing counting orally to 100. We are working on a unit on measuring length and weight. It is important that your child practice writing at home. Encourage them to sound words out as best they can. Review with them “who, what, where, when” and “how” questions when you read stories to them. After you read with your child ask them whether they liked the book or not and why.
