Chain Up Tips, Colorado Department of Transportation
Enclosed is the current brochure from the Colorado Department of
Transportation (CDOT) regarding the commercial vehicle chain law. Please
reproduce and distribute to whom this applies.
Please note that this law applies to all school buses with a capacity of 16 or more
and trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating exceeding 26,001 pounds (level
2).
The new chain law applies to state, federal, and interstate highways throughout
the state.
Please note that under the Alternative Traction Devices section, both automatic
chains and wheel sanders may be used instead of chains.
This brochure also states that when the chain law is in effect, electronic message
signs will be posted indicating which vehicles must chain up.
For more information, contact the CDOT Public Information Office, (303) 7579228.
