11th grade Lesson Plans for ICAP
Eleventh Grade Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP):
“Exploring the Post-Secondary World”
Learning Targets:
1. All juniors will know of and be able to access at least one source for post-secondary education in the career area
they choose.
2. All juniors will know how to access an early college/career experience.
3. All juniors will know their HS graduation requirements, post-secondary admission requirements, and how their
personal career goals align with their course planning.
4. All juniors can articulate the purpose, general format and content of the ACT test, and can apply at least one
test-taking strategy.
5. All juniors can produce a resume for an employer or scholarship committee.
6. All juniors can produce either a college entrance essay or letter of introduction to an employer.
Colorado State ICAP Required Elements Met:
1. Other data reflecting student progress toward postsecondary and workforce readiness, including the student’s
understanding of the financial impact of postsecondary education.
2. The student’s plans for and experience in Contextual and Service Learning, if applicable.
3. The student’s academic progress including courses taken, any remediation or credit recovery and any
concurrent enrollment credits earned.
4. The student’s postsecondary studies as the student progresses through high school.
5. An intentional sequence of courses reflecting progress toward accomplishment of the student’s postsecondary
and workforce objectives.
ASCA Standards Addressed:
1. Academic Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a
wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.
2. Academic Standard C: Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at
home and in the community.
3. Career Development Standard A: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to
knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
4. Career Development Standard B: Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and
satisfaction.
5. Career Development Standard C: Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities,
education, training and the world of work.
6. Personal/Social Development Standard B: Students will make decisions, set goals and take necessary action to
achieve goals.

Activities:
1. Counselor or staff presents “Post-secondary and Career Planning” PowerPoint that emphasizes graduation and
admission requirements, career-goals with course-planning, and all options for career-exploration
(WCCC/CC/MSC, shadows/internships, career and college fairs)
2. All students participate in at least one college or career experience (can be virtual), and document their
experience by completing the survey on Naviance. [My Planner tab Tasks assigned (purple) Complete at
Least One College/Career Experience.]
3. All juniors engage in ACT preparation and education by opening a Method Prep account and working with at
least one module. Access this through Naviance. [College Tab “Test Preparation” on left-hand column]
4. All juniors participate in an ACT educational presentation on the purpose and format of ACT, along with several
test-taking tips.
5. Through Composition 11 (in pacing guide unit 1): all juniors present their research on at least two sources for
post-secondary education that will lead to their career goal. Their research will include: time needed to
complete the program, cost, location, housing (if needed) and entry requirements. Multimedia Grading Rubric
and College Essay Prompts are provided through the D51 GVCIA unit plan. Use Naviance College and Career
sections for research.
6. Through Composition 11 (in pacing guide unit 1): all juniors write a high-quality resume and either a college
entrance essay, or letter-of-introduction to an employer.

Using the Resume Builder in Naviance



Log on to Naviance Family Connection.
Click on the ‘About ME” tab across the top of the page
Click on “resume” in the “Interesting Things About Me” box in the middle of the page.
This resume builder allows you to store all the possible items you could choose to have on a resume. You will start by
adding specific items in the “Build Resume Sections” tab. Then you can customize and print a resume in the “Customize
Your Printable Resume” tab.
To add entries to your resume:
1. Click on the pull-down menu titled “add a new entry.” Choose a category from the list. (It’s usually easier
to skip the objective and summary entries until you know who you are writing the resume for, an employer or
scholarship committee.)
2. Read the “Tips” on the right side of the page, then start writing/adding your information in the boxes. (BE
CAREFUL about your spelling because these boxes don’t mark misspelled words. If you are not a good speller,
open MS Word and write your entries in Word and copy/paste into the Naviance Resume Builder after you’ve
spell-checked them.)
3. Click “Add to Resume” when you are finished with that entry item.
4. Go back to step #1 and add another entry. (You can and should add entries to this resume file anytime you
remember another activity, job, award, etc. that you don’t want to forget about.) Must people update their
resume’s at least once a year.)
When you are ready to put your resume together:
1. First update your profile with you current address, phone, and email. From the “About Me” tab, click on
“profile” in the “official things” category. Then click “edit” on the top of the page and add/change information in
your profile. Click update. To change your email, click on the yellow pencil nest to “email” on your profile.
2. Go back to your resume and click on the “Customize Your Printable Resumes” tab.
3. Click “create a new print format.”
4. Name your resume in a way that makes sense to you. (You might call it “my resume for Taco Bell”, or “resume
for the Boettcher Foundation”)
5. Choose the format and references style that is appropriate for your audience. (IF you open a “view example”
format style, click the X in the corner of the screen when you are ready to return to the customize page.)
6. Decide what entries you want on this particular resume by clicking a checkmark into the box on the left of
each entry. Click specific boxes under each category box or they will not print.
7. Choose the order you want your entries to appear on your resume by clicking and dragging the compassarrows in the upper right-hand corner of the box you want to move up or down. (Choose the order based on what
you think is most important to your audience. The most important items should go first on your resume)
8. Save and Close your resume.

When you are ready to print a resume from your file:
1. Click the “Customize Your Printable Resumes” tab.
2. Click on the name of the resume you want to print.
3. Go to “file” and choose “save as”. Name your resume and save it in .mht to your H drive. Open the file in
Word and edit the resume to fit on one or two pages at the most.
4. Print. Use quality paper if available.
Naviance Family Connection Quick Guide
Go to the PHS homepage – click Naviance. Students, use your Parent Bridge username in the email box
and your PB password in the password box.
Under Career:
Explore by choosing “personality type” (matches your personality to careers)
Or by choosing “cluster finder” (matches what you like to do with careers)
OR discover information about your favorite careers by looking them up by keyword or cluster.
Save the careers you are interested in so that you get information about up-coming events concerning
those careers.
Under College:
Practice for the ACT using Method Prep curriculum (choose test preparation).
Look for scholarships by opening the “scholarship list” or the” national scholarship search.”
Look for colleges that match what you want to study and the type of college you want under
“supermatch” or “college search” or “college lookup”.
Save the colleges you are thinking of so the counselors can let you know when they visit PHS.
Find exciting on-campus early experiences for 9th through 12thgraders under “enrichment
programs.”
Under About Me:
Update your email by choosing “profile” and then clicking on the yellow pencil. This way you get
important information through email.
All college and career information that you saved to your lists shows up in the about me tab,
under favorite careers and favorite colleges.
Download
