French Courses | Outcomes & Indicators May 2013 French 101 Outcome 1 – Students will display a developing knowledge of basic French grammar. Indicators – Classroom activities and tests. Outcome 2 – Students will begin to understand instructions relating to course assignments and classroom activities, and begin to respond to questions directed to them. Indicators – Classroom routines, activities, and tests. Outcome 3 – Students will begin to develop reading comprehension and pronunciation skills needed to continue their study of French. Indicators – Graded reading assignments and comprehension activities. Outcome 4 – Students will develop the ability to compose short expressions using the grammar and vocabulary they are learning. Indicators – Written activities and lab work. Outcome 5 – Students will acquire basic knowledge of French and francophone culture. Indicators – Exams. French 102 Outcome 1 – Students will display a continuing knowledge of basic French grammar. Indicators – Classroom activities and tests. Outcome 2 – Students will develop increased understanding of instructions relating to course assignments, classroom activities and respond to questions directed to them. Indicators – Classroom discussion and other assignments. French 202 Outcome 1 – Students will develop a broad familiarity with major themes and authors in the francophone literary tradition. Outcome 2 – Students will be able to discuss French literature with appropriate literary vocabulary and to write cohesive summaries & reflective responses to literature. Indicators – In-class literary activities and essays. Outcome 3 – Students will improve their reading comprehension. Indicators – Reading tests. French 321 Outcome 1 – Students will understand key grammatical aspects of French and how they can be used in communicative contexts Indicators – Written exams and analytical problem sets. Outcome 2 – Students will develop writing skills approaching the written expression of educated native French speakers. Indicators – Writing assignments. Outcome 3 – Students will broaden their vocabulary and increase their written competency in a variety of expressive styles, such as descriptive, persuasive, and narrative writing. Indicators – Writing assignments and essay portions of tests. French 377 Outcome 1 – Students will understand best practices for effective instruction. Indicators – Exams and classroom assignments. Outcome 2 – Students will understand that the process of second language acquisition includes the interrelated skills of observing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. French 410 Outcome 1 – Students will develop a knowledge and appreciation for each century and the various literary movements of French literature. Indicators – Tests. Outcome 2 – Students will develop competency in writing an intellectual paper on French literature or authors. Indicators – Literary, analytic paper. Outcome 3 – Students will advance their ability to speak French in front of others. Indicators – In-class oral presentations.
