SP 301 STUDY ABROAD Students admitted by the faculty of the Spanish Department will take a variety of classes at an accredited institution in a Spanish speaking country and will spend a minimum of 30 hours per week in class. This program is designed with the objective of providing students with extensive amount of Spanish language input ,opportunities for negotiation of meaning and meaningful interaction in Spanish. Students will also be required to visit sites of archeological, historical and cultural importance. Immersing themselves into the culture of the host families, educational institution and social environment, students will be able to recognize distinctive cultural patterns in multiple domains. They will gain experiential learning of family structures, social roles, institutional arrangements as well as the local history and and distinct cultural patterns of education, business, transportation, etc. Students will also be given opportunity to observe social and cultural institutions relevant to their content area of interest (e.g., business, education, social work, art, engineering etc.) The students’ work and progress will be monitored and evaluated by the LSSU Department of Spanish in cooperation with the foreign institution. The last week of Study Abroad is devoted to reflective discussion and writing. Prerequisites: Students must have completed a minimum of two courses of Spanish at LSSU and obtain the professor’s permission. Credit for this course may be applied to fulfill the requirements for a Spanish major or Spanish minor. Detailed course description and study schedule along with printed course materials are provided by the host school. Two samples of overall program goals and setup are the following: Spanish 301 Study Abroad 2004 Destination: Universidad Internacional The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies (UNINTER) Cuernavaca, Mexico Students admitted by the faculty of the Spanish Department of LSSU will take a variety of classes at Universidad Internacional The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies (UNINTER) Cuernavaca, Mexico and will spend a minimum of 30 hours per week in class. They will also be required to visit sites of archaeological, historical and cultural importance. Spanish 301 Study Abroad 2005 Destination: Universidad Complutense de Madrid The Complutense University will provide intensive language classes for four weeks. During this four-week period, students will attend 4-5 hours of classes daily M-F. LSSU Spanish faculty will teach the class the last two weeks of the six-week period. These last two weeks of classes will consist of two hours of formal class time in the morning. After two hours of formal language instruction, students will visit places of interest in and around Madrid. Through these field trips, students will be exposed to a wide variety of cultural experiences and will be required to use their Spanish skills in real life situations. One of the most noteworthy places of interest that will be visited is the World Heritage City of Alcala de Henares. Only 15 miles from downtown Madrid, this city offers impressive Spanish Renaissance architecture. Museums and visits to historical churches are but two more examples of the types of extracurricular activities that students will accomplish during the final two weeks of our stay.
