ABC bodies Have each student select a letter that they feel they can represent by bending their body into the correct position. (I would have the student represent the letter of their first name so you can use it to help students learn classmate names.) Students can combine as a group to make letters but creativity is more evident with one person. After the students them to post in the room. (students can create an acrostic of their name using Word and inserting their picture. Use the letter to brainstorm and write other objects that start with that letter. Or take other pictures of objects that start with that letter and insert them on the same page in Word.) Been There Done That or Wish I Was There Using a paint program, students can crop a picture or erase the background and save the photo as a png or gif file. Then using Word, students can insert the altered photo of themselves, make the white background transparent, then place it on top of a photo of a location that they will write a report (such as a historical place of importance) or a persuasive essay (why vacation in the Galapagos Islands). --Using this same technique, students can alter how the sphinx looks by adding their head instead. Finger Puppets to tell a Story Use the camera to take pictures of people, places, or things or get the pictures off the Internet. Insert and adjust the pictures so that they are a little larger than the fingers. Fasten the pictures to loops of paper that you can slide over your fingers. Use the puppets to tell a story or re-enact a story just read. School Map or Scavenger Hunt Have students go around the school taking pictures of common places and objects. Then create a school map by inserting the pictures in a document/school blueprint or by printing the pictures, cutting them out, and pasting them on the map the students created using manila paper. --Scavenger hunt would give points to each team that found the most items on a list. Could be a nature list used for classifying species. Trading Cards Students can take pictures of themselves and print them out. Cut the pictures out. On the back, students will right information about themselves that they want others to know. Now they can share them with their friends. --This activity works well for printing famous people, events, places, or objects recently studied/researched and adding the information on the back or below the picture. Then students can pass them out to their classmates for review. Students can become the expert of their object shared. Our Staff Students go around the school taking pictures of the staff. Then they will insert the pictures of the staff and write a brief description, name, job title, and/or job description of each. Helps the students know the staff. Growing Pains Have students take pictures of themselves at the beginning of the year, middle, and end. You can measure the height and lengths of the extremities. Near the end of the year, the students will enter the information in Excel and insert their pictures. Capturing Geometry in Everyday Objects Students will take pictures of objects, inserting them into a program, then label the different geometrical shapes observed. School Rules or Manners Students will take pictures of students modeling proper manners or school rules. Improper manners is not suggested but perhaps pictures of broken school rules can be as effective if they include why the rules are important. The Family Tree During open house take pictures of the parents. These pictures will come in handy throughout the year and parents will be impressed with the use of technology. Seating Chart or Helpful Reminder I am terrible with names. I found that if I take a picture of the students the first day of school, I can refer to the picture and remember the names better. Sometimes I take pictures of the whole class and just crop the pictures to create a picture seating chart. Subs will find it very useful as well. Phases of the Moon Need a great science project. Have students take pictures of the moon every day/night. It will be interesting to watch the orbit and different phases of the moon. Compare your classes results with those on the Internet. Math, As Easy as 1 2 3 Click Use photos of items, people, nature, etc. to demonstrate mathematical functions such as multiplication or addition.
