Business Information Management II (BIM 2) Instructor: Mrs. Keeling Phone: 940-369-3127 E-mail: vkeeling@dentonisd.org Tutorials: Before and After school COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help students enhance the skills learned in BCIS 1 and go beyond the fundamentals to offer an in-depth presentation to Microsoft Office 2007. The course will acquaint students with the proper procedures to create and enhance documents, worksheets, databases, and presentations suitable for coursework, professional purposes, and personal use and expose students to practical examples of the computer as a useful tool. The key focus will be improving proficiency in: Word processing skills using Microsoft Word Spreadsheet skills using Microsoft Excel Database management using Microsoft Access Presentation management skills using Microsoft PowerPoint Other skills covered include networking, operating systems, emerging technologies and advanced-level skills. These technology skills will aid the student in making a successful transition to the workforce and/or postsecondary education. This course is one credit and counts towards your technology credit. TEXTBOOKS: Microsoft Office 2007; Advanced Concepts and Techniques by Shelly Cashman SOFTWARE: Windows XP, Microsoft 2007, MicroType Pro, and other supplemental software SUPPLIES: None required, jump drive optional Course Outline by 6 Weeks: 1st. Student will learn about emerging technology concepts including operating systems, utilities, network security and hardware concepts. 2nd. Students will continue to learn about business environments and apply those to the use of different technologies while using Word to strengthen letter writing skills, create sales proposal, produce form letters and other professional office documents. 3rd. Students will learn to employ their basic business math skills, while exploring different business environments using Excel to create various financial spreadsheets. 4th. Students will learn about research & database management while using Access to learn how to organize & arrange data, create reports and forms and use SQL. 5th. Students will learn how to build effective, professional presentations and develop valuable communication skills using PowerPoint to customize presentations and collaborate with other students. 6th. Students will learn to integrate all Microsoft products and utilize them in business environments. Grading: Grades will be based on class work, class participation, tests and special projects. The grading breakdown is as follows: Daily Grades 50% Tests/Projects 30% Warm-ups/Timings 20% All make-up work should be done before or after school. If time permits, work may be completed during class. However, it will be the student’s responsibility to see that all make-up work is completed and turned in within the specified time. CLASS MANAGEMENT: Be in assigned seat when tardy bell rings. Students will be held responsible for the computer and furniture at his/her assigned workstation. Student will leave his/her workstation clean each day—put all trash in the containers provided, replace any reference or textbooks used, and place your chair under your table as you leave. DO NOT bring gum, food, or drinks into the computer lab. DO NOT bring IPods, Gameboys, MP3s or any other electronics into the computer lab. Students will remain seated until the dismissal bell rings. (No standing at the door) Only use the internet when directed to do so for class purposes (see internet policy). All policies in the STUDENT HANDBOOK will be followed. INTERNET RULES: Students will not use the Internet without permission from the teacher. Students are not allowed to download from the Internet. Students will not enter chat rooms. Students will not enter morally questionable areas. (If a student should accidentally encounter an area of which they are unsure, the teacher should be immediately notified to assist in making the decision. This would include, but is not limited to, vulgar language and/or pictures that are in appropriate.) Students will not print from Internet except by teacher permission. CONSEQUENCES: First Offense: Any student breaking the above Internet rules will be immediately suspended from Internet opportunities and assigned detention. Second Offense: Student will be referred to the office for disciplinary action. Depending on the severity of the offense, this action could result in removal from the class and loss of credit. If a student loses Internet privileges, the student must still complete the projects. They will either have to use the Internet somewhere other than the classroom or complete the project by another means.
