MYP MISSION STATEMENT: The MYP (Middle Years Program) covers the 9th and 10th Grade portion of the International Baccalaureate. The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The goal of this course is to help students begin to communicate with Spanish speakers through written and oral expression. The study of a second language will help them become a more active participant in the global community. The course integrates language with history, culture, daily life, community, health and our environment. Through the study of history and culture, emphasis is placed on interconnectedness, global awareness and the broad movements and patterns of the history of Spanish speakers. Vocabulary and grammatical structures will be taught in context. The course is designed to stimulate interest in and foster respect for other peoples and cultures. Students will be taught in an environment that fosters risk-taking and reflective thinking. TEXTBOOKS: Exprésate Level 2 textbook will be provided. Students must keep their textbook covered at all times. If the student loses the book, please note that these books are very expensive. Parents are also entitled to review each test administered to the parent’s child after the test is administered. Furthermore, the school district is required to make tests readily available for review by parents; however, the school district may specify reasonable hours for such review. Tex. Educ. Code, section 26.006 Providing a parent access to and review of the teaching materials and administered tests fulfills the requirements of the Texas Education Code’s mandate that parents are partners with the school district in the education of children. HOMEWORK: Students must complete the homework on time, in order to receive 100%. I will only accept late homework if the student completes it, or an alternative assignment at my discretion, in a scheduled tutoring session with me. I will not accept late homework that is handed to me already completed, without a tutoring session. The tutoring session and missing work MUST be completed within 48 hours of the homework due date. 90% is the maximum score that I will award on late homework. GRADES: I do not give points to raise a grade, nor do I give extra credit. Grades will only be based on the student’s mastery of a Spanish objective. If a student fails a Test, Quiz, Communicative Activity or Project, they may re-do the work for full credit provided they do the following: submit an application for re-do/re-take within 48 hours of receiving the failed grade, make up all zeros and missing work, attend a regularly scheduled tutorial session, make a timely appointment to do the re-test during my tutoring sessions. MAKE-UP WORK: When a student is absent it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with me to complete the work. Students have the number of days absent plus one day to complete the work. The student must make up missed tests, quizzes, listening and speaking activities before or after school, since these are often a disruption to the class in progress. I will not accept any make-up work after the 6 weeks deadline, unless the student still has time to make it up, according to Denton ISD’s make-up work policy. TUTORIALS: I am available in my room for tutorials on Wednesday mornings from 8:10-8:40am and Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:10-5:00pm. Students must sign in, be prepared (have all needed materials and know what they are there to do/study) and they may not bring friends. This time is reserved for students who desire academic assistance or need to make up a missed quiz or exam. TEACHING: Our class period is fifty or ninety minutes in length. We spend the entire period either in active teaching/learning, reinforcing, practicing (written and /or oral) or testing and evaluating. The reason for this strenuous approach is that a foreign language requires active participation in the classroom at every level, everyday. Extra written practice, memorization, or learning for mastery must be done outside of the classroom and must be the student’s responsibility. Details are important. The student must acquire or expand his ability to memorize, retain, reason, analyze and compare or contrast, as well as to evaluate. These skills will increase and improve considerably throughout the year if he/she follows my directions. His/her self-concept will also grow and develop accordingly. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: Learning a foreign language requires a great deal of concentration and active participation throughout the entire class period! I want all students to feel comfortable in their Spanish class. The Denton Independent School District does not discriminate on the basis of sex, handicap, race, color, and or national origins in its educational programs. Admission to career programs is based on age, grade, interest, aptitude and ability. Lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admissions and participation in any educational programs. Ms. Hall - Pre-AP Spanish 2 Syllabus Page 3 I have one simple rule for my classroom: Students may do whatever they want in the classroom, within District Policy, as long as their behavior does not bother anyone else, including the teacher!
