Ecosystem
is a system where abiotic and biotic
factors interact with each other in a
particular area.

Do biotic and abiotic factors
affect each other?
If there is no water…can anything grow or
survive?
If it is extremely cold one winter, will that
affect whether an animal makes it?

Do biotic and abiotic factors
affect each other?
If there is no water…can anything grow or survive?
No!
If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect
whether an animal makes it?
Yes!
So, abiotic and biotic DO affect each other. Even
though water and temperature aren’t living things,
they DO affect living things!

Ecosystem Interactions
do not necessarily have clear boundaries
due to biotic and abiotic changes
can change daily as things move from one
ecosystem to another

Engage: Organization Activity
Read the following passage then work with your

Gateways Apartment Complex. The apartment complex is
located in the Regency neighborhood of the city Starville.
The city of Starville is located in Denton county in the

Engage Activity – Card Sort
With your partner, examine all the cards
carefully. Determine whether they
represent an organism, a population, a
community, or an ecosystem.
