Welcome to Mrs. Weiper’s Science Class Team 6-1 Room#C101 940-369-1544 http://www.dentonisd.org/Page/50349 Class Rule I have only one rule in my class: Students do not have the right to interfere with the learning, safety, or well-being of others. My Schedule 1st period 2nd period 3rd period 4th period LUNCH 5th period 6th period 7th period 8th period 8:20 – 9: 05 Science 9:09 – 9:54 Science 9:58 – 10:46 Science 10:50 – 11:35 6th Science Conference & Planning - This is the best time to reach me. Email is the preferred way to contact me, however, I am happy to speak with you over the phone or meet with you in person. We will just need to schedule a time. 11:35 – 12:05 12:08 – 12:53 Science 12:57 – 1:42 Team Conference & Planning – this is the best time to conference with all of your child’s teachers for their core classes 1:46 – 2:31 Science 2:35 – 3:20 Science Science Supplies Team Binder with Agenda, Paper, Divided section for Science, and Pencil Pouch with Pencils, Highlighters, Fine point expo marker, and ear buds. You must have a binder with dividers/tabs to mark each of your 5 core subject areas. You will carry this from class to class. For each unit we keep important science papers in the binder. You do not want all your papers mixed up or you will not be able to locate anything. Your binder should contain paper and have a pouch to carry pencils, etc. Composition Book - These will be kept in the classroom. On occasion you will need to take your composition book home to complete assignments or study. These must be returned to school the next day. Agenda Keeping yourself organized in middle school can be a little challenging. Your agenda is a wonderful tool to help with this. Each one of your classroom teachers will require that you write your assignments daily. If you do not have homework assignments for a specific class, write “no homework”. We will do agenda checks to make sure you are following this expectation of writing in your agenda for each class daily. You should have purchased an agenda when you registered. Grading Minor Assessments= 30% of your grade Major Assessments=70% of your grade You may find the dates for your major assessments by using the “Calendar” tab on my website. It will also be written in your agenda. These are grades earned as we go through a science unit. I will assess you through quizzes (often on Friday), and quick checks/quick writes. You will have success if you are keeping up with the instruction in class, completing assigned homework, participating, asking questions, and coming to tutoring if you need extra support. These are grades earned at the end of the science unit. Our school district creates what they call ”common assessments”. You will be taking the same end of unit test that all 6th graders in DISD will be taking. You will only have 2-3 of this type of assessment during a 9 week period. Each test typically has 10-15 questions and should be completed during one class period. You will have success if you are keeping up with the instruction in class, completing assigned homework, participating, asking questions, and coming to tutoring if you need extra support. A passing grade is considered a 70% or higher. If you do not pass, you will be required to fill out a Request to Retest form and will retake any area of the test you did not have success. Specific requirements must be completed before you retake. The retake test questions are not identical as the questions on your first try, however, they will be similar in content. Homework/Late Work Homework will be assigned on an as-needed basis. This will be written in the agenda. It may also be located using the “Assignments” tab on my web site. Homework is key to your pathway to understanding our science unit concepts. If homework is not completed, you may lose a titan token. Absent/Make-up Work It is your responsibility to complete missed assignments. To gather the missed work or to receive assistance understanding what you have missed, you have several options: 1. Check the “Assignments” tab on my website 2. Upon returning, check the “missed work” trays below my class bulletin board 3. Come to tutoring 4. Speak with me before or after of class Students must not wait until the end of a grading period to ask about make-up work. You have the number of days missed plus one to make up assignments Tutoring 7:45-8:15am Mondays (before school) 3:30-4:00pm Fridays (after school) I am more than happy to see you at other times if needed, however, you must schedule that time with me. Occasionally, I may not be available due to meetings. 6th Grade Safety Guidelines and Safety Contract Every DISD middle school student must have a safety contract on file with their science teacher. A student may not participate in science labs until this is completed. The safety contract has been sent home and may also be found by using the “Important Information and Web Links” tab on my website. I need the contract completed and returned.
