Occupational Competencies

Occupational Competencies are the
characteristics that allow one to perform the
duties of their occupation. These can be
divided into three areas:
– Knowledge
– Skill
– Attitude
Knowledge

Knowledge is the
information that one
has learned and can
recall in performing an
occupation. Also
known as “stored
information.”
Skill

Skill is the capacity to
perform activities that
typically require a
high degree of
development in
manipulative areas.
Attitude

Attitude is how a
person mentally feels
about something. This
feeling is
demonstrated by
smiles, friendliness,
honestly, and
productivity at work.
Task Analysis

Task Analysis is the
process used to
identify occupational
competencies. It
involves careful
studying to examine
what a person does at
work.
Competencies Needed for
An Occupation

The competencies required for an
occupation can be divided into four groups:
– Technical Skills are the skills specific to a
certain occupation
– General Education is the preparation one needs
that is not specific to a certain occupation
– Human Relations Skills are the abilities to get
along with other people
– Employability Skills are the abilities to get and
keep a job
