Students who have not completed two years of Physical Education in middle school, must take a Physical Education class their 8th grade year. There is a required uniform including a gray t-shirt, navy shorts and sweats (coaches will provide information). Pre-AP classes provide a more rigorous curriculum. The expectation is that the student must be highly motivated. A contract must be signed by the parent and student with agreement to uphold the high standards and expectations of the enhanced course. Placement in Algebra and Geometry classes is limited to students who meet the district standard on qualifying tests. (All high school students will still need to complete 4 years of math in High School. *Athletics will be available to 8th graders who will participate in competitive volleyball, football, basketball, cross country, and/or track. It will be part of the school day and will fulfill the Physical Education requirement. Practice is held after school when that sport is in season. A physical exam is required before the first day of school. Please note: if a student does not make the team for which they are trying out, they will still remain in athletics for conditioning and skills training. DENTON ISD MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVE COURSES FOR EIGHTH GRADE: ART (full year) This is an advanced class for students especially interested in art. Students will be working with design, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and/or crafts. Understanding and appreciation of self and others through art culture and heritage will be emphasized. BAND 8 (full year) This class is open to students who have demonstrated a degree of proficiency on their instruments. During the fall, selected band students perform as a pep band at pep rallies, at selected games, and as a concert band. During the spring, the band participates in concerts and contests for solos, ensembles, and full band. * CHOIR (full year) Students interested in singing will perform in a variety of programs and locations including concerts, pep rallies, talent shows and school programs. The course places emphasis on beginning vocal technique and fundamental music reading skills.* ORCHESTRA 8 (full year) This is for continuing students demonstrating an interest in and ability on stringed instruments. Technique, care of instruments, music reading skills, music sensitivity, performance and creative self-expression are integral parts of the curriculum. * PRINCIPLES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (PIT) (full year) This class is a study of various technology systems and administrative procedures that enable a worker to manage or function in the work place. Students enhance technology and communication skills as they study telecommunications & technology as used in the business work place. Students will study the entire Microsoft Office Suite in addition to web design, graphic design, income taxes, budgets, and other business documents. Prerequisite: Must have passed TSDA. This class counts as 1 full high school credit upon meeting the high school requirement. SPANISH I-8/Mandarin Chinese I-8(full year) This class emphasizes the listening, speaking, reading, and writing of Spanish/Mandarin Chinese for everyday communication. Students learn basic grammar and vocabulary and study the culture of Hispanic/Eastern countries. This course is the second half of the high school Spanish I/Mandarin Chinese I course and is therefore rigorous. Students will be required to complete the second half in the eighth grade to obtain one high school elective credit for graduation. Students are still required to complete 2-3 additional years of Spanish/Mandarin Chinese to graduate from High School. *students must have successfully completed SPANISH I-7/Mandarin Chinese I-7 in 7th grade to take this course THEATER ARTS (full year) This is an advanced class for students especially interested in theater arts. This is a working class in which students are expected to participate in the writing, reading, cutting of scenes, researching of materials, preparing, rehearsing, and performing of creative segments in groups or individually.* STUDY HALL (full year) In this class students will do school work during this period. GATEWAY TO TECHNOLOGY (full year) This is a rigorous class in which students use a project-based curriculum designed to challenge and engage the curiosity and imagination of middle school students. Students will envision, design, and test their ideas in robotics and animation using the same advanced modeling software that is currently used by companies such as Lockheed Martin, Intel, and Sprint (please note that there is a $20.00 supply fee for this course). TOUCH SYSTEMS DATA ENTRY (full year) In this class students will develop computer keyboard mastery techniques, speed and accuracy, copy arrangement, and communication skills and the entire Microsoft Office Suite. Touch Systems Data Entry counts as a ½ high school credit. (This course can only be taken one time in middle school.) *Waivers are available to pay expenses of uniforms and instruments for students who qualify for assistance. Students have the opportunity to compete in UIL sanctioned contests and must maintain eligibility in order to compete.
