particular attention to ethnicity, class, age, and sexual orientation; (2) To incorporate newly emerging
risk, prevention, and treatment data about women in a timely manner; (3) To foster critical thinking with
respect to sex inclusiveness (or exclusiveness) of clinical research; (4) To include conditions and illnesses
more common in, more serious in, or exclusive to women (such as domestic violence, menopause,
osteoporosis); (5) To help repair the arbitrary fragmentation of women's medical care that divides
"systemic" health from "genitourinary," "breast," and "mental" health; (6) To create an environment
where students can propose new research questions and areas of investigation while learning appropriate
research methodologies (i.e., gender-based analyses); (7) To increase students' sensitivity to differences
among all individuals that affect the course and management of disease and how, among various cultural
and ethnic groups, these differences may result in sub optimal prevention and treatment; and (8) To
educate students about proper utilization of community resources when caring for female patients.
Project: Students may choose from one of the following: a community resource project, a case report, or
a research proposal. Each will require at least one research question that merits further investigation in
relation to the given topic. Evaluation: Faculty evaluation of students will be based on attendance and
participation in didactic sessions, participation at community based sites, and the scholarly project.
Students will receive a grade according to the current grading system at USF-COM.
Course Description: This elective is an interdisciplinary course that explores women's health
chronologically from birth to the elderly years. The emphasis will be on broadening students'
understanding of the scope of women's health care and providing the skills necessary to comprehensively
and sensitively treat all women. Students will interact with professionals involved in women's health
from disciplines such as public health, nursing, sociology, medical humanities, and medicine with varying
specialties represented.

Course Description: Clinical experience supplemented by didactic curriculum of lectures & conferences.
This course is multidisciplinary in nature, designed to help the fourth year student develop an
understanding of both benign and malignant breast disease, and the problems encountered by women
suffering from them. The experience will focus on honing basic clinical and surgical skills, as well as
developing an understanding of and appreciation for the psychosocial aspects of breast disease. As such,
this course is aimed at the generalist student, not just students considering surgery as a career. Students
will spend 25 hours a week in clinical activities in the Breast Care Center at BIDMC. Students will be
assigned their own patients, and be responsible for taking histories, performing physical examinations,
reviewing mammograms and ultrasounds, and evaluating the patient's problem and developing
therapeutic options. In cases where surgery is indicated, the student will follow his/her patient, actively
assist in the surgery, and meet during surgery with the pathologist diagnosing the surgical specimen.
Students will follow their own patients post-operatively and participate in planning their management.
Students will also participate in the multi-disciplinary breast clinic and spend time in Breast Imaging and
Pathology.

Objectives/Goals: The primary goals of this clerkship are to educate students about the major health
concerns of women including issues of age, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation; to provide the skills to
thoroughly and sensitively treat women patients; and to encourage the process of critical thinking about
gender issues in clinical research and treatment.
Course Description: The clerkship begins with an introduction to the healthcare seeking practices of
women. Then, through the life cycle approach, women’s health issues from adolescence to geriatrics are
reviewed. Special topics include sexuality, mental health, cardiovascular health, and violence against
women. There are sessions on biological, psychological, and sociological transitions, such as menarche.
The course wraps up with a focus on prevention and health maintenance to emphasize a wellness model
of women’s health. Each subject was designed by a “content expert” faculty member and contains welldefined goals in knowledge, skills and attitudes. The clerkship includes didactic and clinical experiences.
The clinical sites emphasize ambulatory care but include specialty services such as breast clinic, Planned
Parenthood, and sessions with practitioners who examine and treat victims of sexual assault.

Objectives/Goals: (1) Become familiar with the historical and current views of the role of the immune
system as it pertains to mammalian reproduction; (2) Be able to describe the immune effector
mechanisms responsible for tissue rejection and how the placenta can circumvent these mechanisms; (3)
Learn critical review of current original research reports; and (4) Gain critical background necessary for
interpreting reports on the diagnosis and potential therapy for immune-mediated obstetrical disorders such
as recurrent pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction.
Course Description: The ability of immunocompetent women to gestate a genetically distinct embryo
remains one of the greatest enigmas in nature. Given that the primary purpose of the immune system is to
recognize and reject any foreign organism, it remains a mystery as to why the maternal immune system
does not reject the developing embryo. Current evidence suggests that some obstetrical complications
may be a reflection of immune rejection episodes at the placenta, although the mechanisms for this are not
well understood. Consequently, treatment of immune-mediated obstetrical complications remains
controversial because of this lack of basic science knowledge at the maternal-fetal interface. This elective
is designed to investigate and critically analyze the potential roles that the immune system may play in
influencing obstetrical performance. The course will include a series of informal presentations and
discussions of pertinent basic science and clinical reproductive immunology reports. The goal is to
provide a solid knowledge base of reproductive immunology to aid in understanding therapeutic
approaches. This elective is designed particularly for students with interests in obstetrics and gynecology,
perinatology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and family practice.
