Benjamin Grubb Humphreys was born in Claiborne County, Mississippi on August
17, 1865. He attended the University of Mississippi and served as the
Superintendent of Education of Leflore County and district attorney for the Fourth
Circuit Court District of Mississippi. He served in the Second Mississippi
Volunteer Infantry when war was declared against Spain in 1898 and was a
commissioned major in the First Mississippi Regiment of the Mississippi National
Guard. He was elected to Congress in 1902 and although he had experience of
many vocations of life, he specialized in river and harbor legislation. His ten terms
of service gave him the distinction of serving for a longer period of time than any
other Representative from the State of Mississippi.
Scope and Content:
The Benjamin Grubb Humpreys Collection contains a note from U.S.
Representative Benjamin G. Humphreys asking for support for his re-election as
Mississippi’s delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1906 and an article
from the local newspaper concerning the election. It also contains a book printed
in 1925 of memorial addresses delivered in the U.S. Senate and House in memory
of Rep. Humphreys.
