In the first semester, students are given assignments introducing specific aspects of the medium. In the second semester, they explore an individual project. Regular group critiques and individual consultation with the lecturer provide feedback and the exchange of ideas. Thematic slide lectures relate to assignments and give students exposure to historical and contemporary photographic imagery. Colour photography is introduced. Students explore an individual project to produce a coherent group of work for their final portfolio. Studio theory is taught in a weekly slide lecture covering the history of photography. The project is monitored through weekly group critique sessions and individual consultation with the lecturers. Emphasis is placed on the innovative expression of ideas and techniques which use the formal and conceptual qualities of the photographic medium. Students first present a short proposal for their projects, then later in the year, make a more formal presentation of their work, placing it in the context of historical and contemporary practice.
