Students encounter a variety of cultural artefacts such as advertisements, poems, films and narratives and observe the evolution of the representation of love. In interpreting these texts there is an emphasis on using existing theories to ‘read’ them. Conclusions are then drawn about the culture which produced them. Students thus become acquainted with such theories as feminism, marxism, or existentialism, and will experience using these theoretical frameworks to interpret texts. Through this, they also become aware of the fact that almost any cultural artefact can be ‘read’ for the beliefs and attitudes of a particular era, gender, nation or culture. By following the topos of love through approximately two centuries, students also acquire a deeper insight into and understanding of German and European cultural history.
