Principal Study Composition 1

Enrolment code: FCC100

Offered: Hobart: semesters 1 & 2

Provides a program of study meeting the individual needs of students, and leads to the progressive development of an individual style of composition in a variety of musical genres. A wide range of styles and idioms are included. Semester 1 concentrates on idiomatic writing for solo instruments. Semester 2 addresses the composition of small-scale works and concentrates on the initial development of compositional style.

Assessment mode class assignments, 30-min interview and presentation of folio ea sem.

Foundation Core Studies (Classical)

Offered: Hobart: semester 2

Special note: required unit for BMus students

Introduces musicianship skills to students in the areas of pitch and rhythm, and the development of keyboard skills. The basics of sight singing and sight reading are emphasised in order to develop fluency in instrumental and vocal sight reading. Dictation forms an integral part of the unit in the areas of melody, rhythm and harmony. Students will develop understanding of style, form and genre through singing music from the period approximately 1680–1825. A weekly keyboard skills class focuses on the development of keyboard technique, sight reading and keyboard harmony with an emphasis on the support of the student’s work through specific assignments and the preparation of score reading and assigned pieces.

Performance for Composers 1

Enrolment code: FCC150

Offered: Hobart: semesters 1 & 2

Provides practical performance experience and training for students whose principal study is composition. Students select an area of study from the instrumental or vocal range offered for Principal Study as available. Emphasis is given to the distance travelled in performance skills rather than an external measure of achievement.

Principal Study Composition 2

Enrolment code: FCC200

Offered: Hobart: semesters 1 & 2

Students build on FCC100 skills and commence writing works of a larger scale and dimension. Students in the unit are expected to initiate projects within the bounds of possible performance opportunities. Presentation of seminars in semester 1 must focus on the work of an Australian composer and in semester 2 on the composer’s own work.

Students develop understanding of style, form and genre of music through singing music from c.1850 to present. A weekly keyboard skills class continues the development of keyboard technique, sight reading and keyboard harmony with an emphasis on the support of the student’s work through specific assignments and the preparation of score reading and assigned pieces.

Advanced Core Studies (Classical)

Offered: Hobart: semester 2

Continues development of musicianship skills in aural and keyboard begun in FCC120.

Sight singing and sight reading skills are emphasised in order to continue developing fluency in instrumental and vocal sight reading. Dictation forms an integral part of the unit with the introduction of melodic and harmonic modulation and chromaticism.

Polyrhythmic and asymmetrical rhythmic structures are introduced. Students develop understanding of style, form and genre through singing music from the period prior to c.1680. A weekly keyboard skills class continues the development of keyboard technique, sight reading and keyboard harmony with an emphasis on the support of the student’s work through specific assignments and the preparation of score reading and assigned pieces.

Principal Study Composition 3

Offered: Hobart: semesters 1 & 2

Develops skills for writing larger scale projects which may include large ensemble, technology or music theatre. Students are expected to initiate projects within the bounds of possible performance opportunities and are especially encouraged to seek composition opportunities with ensembles both within and outside the Conservatorium. Presentations of seminars in semester 1 must focus on the work of an Australian composer and in semester 2 on the composer’s own work.
