Offered: Hobart: semester 2, Launceston: semester 2
Develops an understanding of research methods and a systematic approach to business
problems as well as developing a critical understanding of the value of existing research.
The unit helps the manager/researcher build business knowledge and theory that
generates new questions as well as providing answers. Topics include identifying research
problems; formulating specific research questions; reading and evaluating published
research. the approach is not necessarily outcome driven but is designed to encourage
students to adopt an attitude of inquiry and learning. The section on qualitative research
methods includes techniques such as case studies and focus groups. The quantitative
research section includes a discussion of sampling methods, the design of survey
instruments, statistical analyses up to multiple regression and basic factor analysis and use
of appropriate statistical software. As the unit is taught from the perspective of the
manager/researcher, it does not include statistical modelling approaches or require
students to understand underlying formulas. The focus is on the application and use of
various techniques rather than how to generate underlying formulas. This differentiates
the unit from purely technical approaches to statistics.

In recent years, the Asia-Pacific region has emerged as an economic powerhouse of the

world trade. This is also a region with diversity where the East meets the West. There are,

This unit examines the various factors that impact upon the successful management of
international business operations within this region. On completion of this unit, students

Develops an appreciation and understanding of the role of the entrepreneur in creating
value by innovation for a business and society. Using the innovation-based evolutionary
systems approach, this unit sets out the elements that make up success and failure in
innovation. These elements relate to the role that the entrepreneur plays in coordinating

entails. Entrepreneurs in various forms of business are examined: owner-firm, corporate
manager, financial institution, public sector manager. How entrepreneurs innovate and
then make the appropriate investment decisions are the crucial issues in all business
forms. Finally, the role of the State is examined in how it can enhance and hinder the
