Unit description: Students develop their design appreciation and design skills
through a series of exercises which explore space and form as well as aesthetic
concepts such as proportion, balance, harmony, colour, texture, and contrast,
etc. Presentation work is subject to critique by staff and student peers. Work is

Unit description: Introduces students to landscape and cultural issues
affecting and influencing design intervention. In this unit students investigate
both natural and artificial environments. The study forms a basis for site

Unit description: Consists of lecture/seminar and studio components. The
lecture/seminar component covers the principal periods in the history of
Western Architecture up to the 18th century, including its links with Western
Asia and North Africa. The unit also gives some appreciation of the largely
separate architectural tradition of East Asia. It stresses the relationships
between building construction and architectural form and space, between
architecture and its cultural context, and between architecture and urban and
landscape design. The studio component deals with the application of
knowledge and understanding of architectural history and theory to the
practice of design.

second explores the nature of the building industry and organisations within it.
Modes of architectural practice and their legal implications are examined and

Unit description: Is the final unit and culmination of the BArch program,
requiring students to develop their selected design project from site analysis
and initial concept, through preliminary design, design development and
constructional design stages, to final presentation. The unit will develop
students’ ability to program and manage a semester-long project, to present
their work in a professional manner and to articulate clearly the rationale
behind the sequence of decisions that have led to the final design proposal.
