The 20th century has been one of profound change and the unit considers the major events, people, and social, economic and political developments in Asia. Topics include: Orientalism, European ideas about Asia, nationalism, Marxism, independence movements and struggles, capitalism in Asia, socialism in Asia, regionalism and the emergence of the Asia Pacific. The unit provides students with basic oral/aural communicative skills in Japanese, Chinese or Indonesian and some familiarity with written forms of the language. At the same time students are introduced to basic norms and values of the societies in which these languages are spoken as expressed in social interaction. By the completion of the unit students should be able to conduct conversations in various everyday situations in a communicative way, to interact in varying contexts expressing appropriate degrees of politeness, be capable of analysing the norms and values structuring such communication and of drawing comparisons with the expression of values through language in their own cultures.
