A wide range of styles and idioms is included. A program of study is established on an individual basis with regard to the needs and stage of development of each student. It normally includes technical work and selections from the repertoire of major works, concertante works, recital pieces and technical compositions. Emphasis is on progressive development throughout the duration of the unit. Melodic awareness and interpretation are developed. All study is approached through direct application to the instrument. Subjects include Aural, Music Theory, Listening and Keyboard Skills. Issues investigated include pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture, density, dynamics, articulation, duration and decay. The aim of the unit is to develop the basic of sight singing using major/minor triads, inversions and harmonic movement, leading to a basic understanding of tonal music. The development of individual creativity in writing music, and basic harmonic writing in parts is supported, and the basic principles of composition and musical analysis are also examined in some detail.
