Principal Study Guitar 1

Unit description: Provides a course of study in classical guitar covering both
technique and repertoire. A wide range of styles and idioms is included. A
program of study is established on an individual basis with regard to the needs
and stage of development of each student. It normally includes technical work
and selections from the repertoire of major works, concertante works, recital
pieces and technical compositions. Emphasis is on progressive development
throughout the duration of the unit.

Teaching: individual tuition and master classes equiv 59 hrs student contact
time over the year
Assess: sem technical exams (25% ea), 20-min recital in sem 1 (25%), 30-min
recital in sem 2 (25%); the latter may consist of up to 25% material that has
been assessed on one prior occasion

Guitar Repertoire 1

Offered: Hbt, sem 1&2
Unit description: Embraces studies of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and
20th century music and traditional music from Spain and South America, and
includes the study of style, ornamentation, timbral interpretation, phrasing and
voicing, the reading of tablature, interpretation of transcriptions and special
techniques related to style. Melodic awareness and interpretation are
developed. All study is approached through direct application to the
instrument.

music related to the written assignment (40%), participation and

Unit description: Introduces sound as the basis for music. Subjects include
Aural, Music Theory, Listening and Keyboard Skills. Issues investigated
include pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture, density, dynamics, articulation, duration
and decay. The aim of the unit is to develop the basic of sight singing using
major/minor triads, inversions and harmonic movement, leading to a basic
understanding of tonal music. The development of individual creativity in
writing music, and basic harmonic writing in parts is supported, and the basic
principles of composition and musical analysis are also examined in some
detail.

Teaching: 6x1hr classes weekly comprising Aural (2 hrs), Listening (1 hr),
Music Theory (1 hr), Keyboard Musicianship (1 hr) and Aural/Listening
Workshop (1 hr) (22 wks)
Assess: aural tests (10%), end-of-sem viva voce exams in Aural involving sight
singing of melody and rhythm (10% ea), end-of-year listening assignment
(20%), weekly Music Theory assignments (10%), end-of-sem exams in
Music Theory (10% ea), Keyboard Musicianship assignments (20%).

and 20th century and traditional music from Spain and South America. Aspects
