1950s. AIR-CONDITIONING
SWEEPS STATE
• The widespread use of air-conditioning in homes
and offices dramatically increases Arizona's
"livability" and attractiveness to newcomers.
• Starting in 1929, when the new Westward Ho
Hotel in downtown Phoenix boasted of its airconditioning, some hotels and offices in Phoenix
were mechanically cooled.
• But now, in the 1950s, air-conditioning really
makes its mark, and affordable cooling
contributes to a wild building boom.
• In 1959 alone, Phoenix sees more new
construction than in more than three decades
from 1914 to 1946.

Beat Movement
• In the aftermath of World War II, at the dawn of
the Cold War, a new creative movement
occurred in America among a generation of
young poets and visual artists.
• The term "Beat," coined in the late 1940s by
Herbert Huncke, a writer and Times Square
denizen, first appeared in print in John Clellon
Holmes' New York Times article of 1952 "This is
the Beat Generation," where it was initially was
defined as "poor, down and out, deadbeat, sad,
used."

Women’s roll
• Women were supposed to fulfill certain roles, such as a caring mother, a
diligent homemaker, and an obedient wife.
• The perfect mother was supposed to stay home and take care of
husband and children.
• A diligent housewife had dinner on the table precisely at the moment her
husband arrived from work.
• A wife was a "good" wife only if she carried out her man's every order
and agreed with him on everything.
• Pleasantville's Betty was an appropriate example of a 50's mother.
• A diligent homemaker not only kept the house sparkling but she cooked
dinner, did laundry and ran errands.
• New products appeared in the
market place, as various
industries responded to
consumer demand.
• Electrical household appliances
were in most households.
• Mr. Potato Head and Hula Hoop
