Lesson Plan
Have students fill in the vocabulary and do the checks and definitions they already know
(if any). Have students write them in this order, the order they appear with definitions
in the article.
organic
inorganic
carbohydrates
lipids
proteins
amino acids
alanine
globular proteins
nucleic acids
nucleotide
catabolic reactions
anabolic reactions
metabolism
metabolic rate
acidic
basic
pH
catalyst
activation energy
enzymes
salivary amylase
1st read
Give the article to the students. Number the paragraphs together. Have students highlight the
vocabulary words as they read through the article for the first time. They should underline the
definition as they read as well. Finally they should transfer definitions to the vocabulary sheet.
They may see a vocabulary word more than once. It’s okay to highlight it more than once. After
the first read have the students answer Section 1 questions.
2nd read
Have the students read the article again. They should use the provided chart in Section 2 to
describe and explain the 4 macromolecules and then label the pH scale line.
