Native Replication Functionality (example)
Create your policy (per library)
Choose which tapes (7, 8, 9) should
be replicated to DR site
Note that in this config the DR-site B/U server should be stand
alone and only become part of the Primary domain when IT
becomes the Primary server (during a“disaster”)

DR-site NBU server is scanning the
library & updating its catalogue

The catalogue could be replicated
thus allow immediate use of the lib

ProtecTIER FSI-CIFS Interface
 ProtecTIER relies on the mature Samba SMB/CIFS software stack
 Samba will emulate all the SMB/CIFS filesystem functionality to clients
 Internally the Samba VFS (virtual filesystem) is mapped to ProtecTIER’s native FSI
(filesystem interface)
 NFS (UNIX-based file sharing) will employ the same native ProtecTIER filesystem
interface, with different VFS mapping

FSI-CIFS Overview
 CIFS file system interface (aka SMB), targeting small & medium sized Windowsbased NAS backup environments
•
Target environment: customers backing up <15TB per day
 Client/server network protocol for sharing files over the network, in Microsoft
Windows environments
 ProtecTIER emulaates the server side of SMB/CIFS, enabling SMB/CIFS clients
to store/access data using this open protocol
 ProtecTIER emulates Windows file system behavior and present a virtualized
hierarchy of file systems, directories, and files to Windows CIFS clients
•
And transparently, ProtecTIER provides its native value to this process: Dedupe
 Future releases will include dual-node cluster support, and increased
performance

FSI-CIFS/NFS Futures/Spec Highlight
FSI CIFS/NFS scalability specifications (v3.3)
 File systems per repository: up to 128 (4 on TS7620)
 Nominal file system size: up to 256TB
 Files per file system: up to 1 million
 Files per repository: up to 16 million (4mil on TS7620)
 Streams/“open files” per repository: up to 192 (64 on TS7620)
CIFS + NFS coexistence in same repository
 System is able to handle backup and restore activities from both CIFS/NFS clients in parallel
 Support exporting of a directory as either CIFS share or NFS export.
 Any directory written/created as CIFS can be exported as NFS mount-point, and vice versa
 Data can be backed-up using CIFS at the source site, be replicated to a destination site and
then be accessed at the destination using NFS and vice versa (“Doomsday” scenario)
26

IBM Systems
CIFS + NFS Coexistence - Details
Authentication
 Support NFS Unix style authentication (AUTH_UNIX) using client's UID and GID
 Provide method(s) of authentication which allow same user from both CIFS/NFS to be authorized the same on PT
(e.g. Workgroup, AD with Windows SFU, NIS/LDAP)
Authorization
 System shall maintain both permissions bits and their ACLs mapping at all time.
 Mapping of ACLs ↔ permission bits is based on the POSIX 1003.1e standard draft
Locking inter-op
 No support for NFS advisory locks, CIFS opportunistic locks, and byte-range locking
Filename/Pathname case sensitivity Links
 Symbolic links: created by NFS shall be listed as files in CIFS. Support deleting/renaming a symlink by CIFS
(shall affect symlink itself and not the file pointed to by symlink). Symbolic links shall be supported by replication.
(deferred to future release)
 Hard links: not supported
Hidden files
 Only .prefix files shall be marked as Hidden in Windows/CIFS (no support for opposite direction)

LeasePlan Information Services
Reduces management overhead and increases performance
Business Challenge
LeasePlan Information Services Ltd. experienced extreme growth in both data and business
volumes which breached the maximum capacity of the company's existing storage. While
being costly to run and maintain, the existing storage also suffered limited scalability and
performance issues. This affected the quality and level of customer service provided by LPIS
and consumed most of its IT budget, hindering other purchases.
Solution
LPIS conducted a Butterfly study, part of the IBM Storage Infrastructure Optimization
process, to analyze its existing storage environment and help determine the best solution to
accommodate its needs. Upon completion of the study, LPIS implemented the IBM TS7650G
ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway as a more scalable, higher-performing storage platform
with deduplication capabilities.
Benefits
System performance greatly increased, which accelerated server restoration times from 35
hours to only one hour, an improvement of approximately 97 percent. LPIS reduced backup
administration times by 80 percent, in turn reducing management overhead and simplifying
overall administration. Staff members can now focus more on business strategy and rest
assured that company data is fully managed and under control.

customers – but its systems were struggling with escalating data
volumes.
Solution
VEKA deployed an IBM® TS7650G ProtecTIER® Deduplication
Gateway to cope with growing data volumes, accelerating
backups and reducing the risk of downtime for key SAP systems.
Benefits
VEKA significantly improved data-backup performance, reducing
its backup windows by 75 percent. The client also uses the
solution to gain greater backup capacity and higher levels of
redundancy and reliability.

“The IBM ProtecTIER solution has
reduced the time required for a full
system backup from 17 hours to just
3.5 hours – an improvement of more
than 75 percent. Keeping backup
times short also gives our IT staff more
time to work on optimizing our systems
during maintenance windows, resulting
in better performance.”

Notes:
Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that
any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and
the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here.
