ED 102: Seminar
Spring 2013
Thursdays 5:00 - 6:30pm at Fenway High School (except where indicated)
Instructors: Ryan Redmond and Chad Johnson
Overview
● This semester in Education 102, we will continue to frame our work around the two driving themes that we’ve focused on up to this
point: (1) developing a discourse of collegiality and (2) making sense before making judgment. In addition, it’s now time for us to
also increasingly turn out attention to another pair of themes: (3) paying attention to student thinking and (4) critically examining
the role of the IT in the classroom. Using the conceptual framework that you have built thus far - through Ed 101, through other
courses, and through your experiences in your school placement - we intend for you to look at your own teaching as a text this
semester.
Primary Assignments
● Looking at Student Work
● Journaling
● Consultation Project
● Videotaping
● Portfolio
Calendar
● You will be following the public school calendar rather than the Tufts’ calendar. You will take the public school vacations in February
and April rather than the Tufts’ spring break in March. Seminar will NOT be held during those vacation weeks; seminar will be held
during the March Tufts’ break.
Meeting with your Supervisor
● Your supervisor is another mentor/coach in your process of becoming a teacher, and the individual who, along with input from your
cooperating practitioner, will complete your final practicum evaluation, the Preservice Performance Assessment (PPA). Supervisors are
scheduled to observe you (five times for traditional student teachers and six times for interns) during the practicum, three sessions of
which should include a meeting with your cooperating teacher(s). You will have the opportunity to set observation goals, have a
conversation about your classes, and receive written feedback about your lessons. Part of your professional responsibility is to
communicate with your supervisor and arrange for observations and meetings. You should provide, in advance, a lesson plan to your
supervisor of the lesson(s) he or she will observe. As issues and questions arise for you, you may also seek out your supervisor for
advice on many aspects of the teaching life.
Paperwork
● As you were expected to do for the fall semester, you are responsible for keeping a log of your direct teaching hours (150 minimum)
and other teaching-related hours (150 minimum). Submit this log to Ryan Redmond at the end of the semester. Additionally, you are
responsible for completing other paperwork such as a final placement evaluation, a degree sheet and exit survey in a prompt manner.
Forms may be found on the department website in the Forms section of the Student Resources page.
