Contour drawing
Create four drawings of your hand. Do one drawing of each type: simple contour, varied width contour,
cross contour, and gesture contour. Please draw larger than life and fill the page and let the lines (edges) go
off the page. Break up the negative space (back ground).
Contour is the outer edge of an object or shape that is most often defined by line.
Simple contour line is a drawing with no variations in line width.
Varied width contour is the use of thick and thin lines to define the shape of the object.
Cross contour- a line that can define surface undulations between the outermost edges of shapes or
objects.
Gesture contour- is a gesture drawing followed by a contour line.
Materials: pencils and 14” x 17” canson paper
