April 11, 2016 Mrs. Anderson’s Class First Grade Week 31 Newsletter Hello wonderful Room 1 families! I’m extremely happy to announce that after much consideration, I have decided to include our class in the First Grade Cardboard Construction Challenge!! This will be my first time attempting a project of this kind and of this size, so I’m extremely excited to see what the students imagine and create. Mrs. Ranelle’s class in Room 3, and Mrs. Reichert’s class in Room 4 will also be taking part in this challenge with us, although their projects will look quite different from ours. This challenge will allow our students to have an opportunity to exercise their creativity while following the engineering design process. They will be required to follow each step in the design process in order to reach their final project. The steps include: asking questions, planning/brainstorming different ideas, building, improving, and evaluating. I’m not going to disclose the details of what the students will be creating quite yet. I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Because this project involves many steps and a lot of creative and critical thinking, we will spend about three weeks working on it. Our goal is to finish by May 4th so that we can have a celebration showcasing our projects for the entire school and our families. The families will be invited to join us from 10:00 – 11:00 that morning, so make sure to mark your calendars now! If you are currently a volunteer, I apologize for not sending out the new schedule. I’ve been sorting out the project details. If you are put on the new schedule to come help out, please be aware that the majority of your time will be spent helping with this project. It involves a lot of cardboard cutting and hot gluing with one – on – one support, and I won’t be able to do it alone. I will be sending home the new schedule by the end of this week. As far as supplies go, I am in the process of collecting large cardboard boxes, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to collect enough for 26 students. With that being said, if you have any large packing boxes laying around that aren’t in use, we could definitely use them. If you are able to supply boxes, please send them in by next Monday, April 18, 2016. I will send updates of needed supplies as our end date approaches. Lastly, our Fund Run is this week. Please make sure you and your child are working hard to collect pledges this week. This fundraiser will supply our student council with the much needed funds to help support school events, fundraisers, school supplies, etc. With that being said, we need parent volunteers to help keep track of the laps ran by each child during the run. We are trying to get one volunteer per class. If this would be something you’re interested in, please let me know as soon as possible. I hope everyone has a wonderful week! Your Friend, Morgan Anderson *We are still accepting snack and glue stick donations!
