The following is an agreement form that addresses rights and responsibilities of the School Counseling candidate, the Faculty Supervisor, and the School Site Supervisor in the 600-hour internship in the School Counseling Graduate Program. Practicum/Internship Rights and Responsibilities School Counselor Candidate’s Rights and Responsibilities Rights: 1. The Counselor Candidate has a right to know the criteria for evaluation in the course and to receive progress evaluations from the faculty supervisor on a regular basis. 2. The Counselor Candidate has a right to know the expectations and procedures of the faculty and site supervisors. 3. The Counselor Candidate has a right to expect supervision and feedback in the management of cases by both the faculty and site supervisors on a regularly scheduled and as needed basis. 4. The Counselor Candidate has a right to know the procedure for handling emergencies according to both school site and Practicum/Internship/Internship (University) policy. 5. The Counselor Candidate has a right to ask questions regarding the counseling process, standards of care and the correct handling of cases. 6. The Counselor Candidate has a right to have the rules and regulations of the school site explained fully. Responsibilities: 1. The Counselor Candidate has the responsibility to locate and secure an approved school site and site supervisor for completion of Practicum/Internship. (Assistance from the Dept. of Counselor Education and Human Services is available upon request.) 2. The Counselor Candidate has the responsibility for prompt and regular attendance in Practicum/Internship (at the school site and at group supervision). 3. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to be prepared for seminar, supervisory and counseling sessions. 4. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to request additional supervision as needed. 5. The Counselor Candidate has the responsibility to notify the faculty supervisor when issues arise with the site supervisor, the school site or with clients that are not adequately addressed and resolved with the site supervisor. 6. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to inform the site supervisor and the faculty supervisor (when appropriate) of problems with cases or client emergencies. 7. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to compile and maintain complete documentation of client services according to school policies and procedures, in a timely and professional manner. 8. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to compile and maintain complete Practicum/Internship documentation in a timely and professional manner. 9. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to follow the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). 10. The Counselor Candidate has a responsibility to be aware of the legal issues related to counseling in schools (e.g., confidentiality, privileged communication, duty to warn and protect particularly in regard to suspected child abuse and neglect). Faculty Supervisor’s Rights and Responsibilities Rights: 1. The faculty supervisor has the right to determine the expectations and requirements of the Practicum/Internship. 2. The faculty supervisor has the right to expect the Counselor Candidate’s regular and punctual attendance at seminar (Group Supervision). 3. The faculty supervisor has the right to evaluate the Counselor Candidate’s performance based on the stated criteria found in the School Counseling Program Handbook. 4. The faculty supervisor has the right to expect the Counselor Candidate to follow directives when they are given. 5. The faculty supervisor has the right to reprimand Counselor Candidates whose behavior is not consistent with the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). 6. The faculty supervisor has the right to identify areas for remediation if the Counselor Candidate’s skills, abilities and/or performance are not satisfactory. Responsibilities: 1. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to assist the Counselor Candidate in identifying an approved school site supervisor. 2. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to clearly state expectations, requirements and grading criteria. 3. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to inform Counselor Candidates of the ethical responsibilities and standards of the Counseling profession. 4. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to inform Counselor Candidates of legal issues related to the profession (e.g., confidentiality, privilege communication, duty to warn and protect, malpractice, and negligence). 5. The faculty supervisor, in conjunction with the site supervisor, has the responsibility to ensure that Counselor Candidates provide adequate disclosure so that clients make informed decisions about entering and continuing in counseling. 6. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to schedule group supervision (and individual supervision as needed) with the Counselor Candidate based on the needs of both the individual Counselor Candidate and client issues. Ultimately, the site supervisor is responsible for issues pertaining to clients. 7. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to provide feedback to Counselor Candidates regarding their skill development and course grade at regular intervals during the term. 8. The faculty supervisor has the responsibility to inform the Counselor Candidate, at the earliest possible time, if work is not satisfactory and to detail specific behavioral expectations which can lead to improvement. School Site Supervisor’s Rights and Responsibilities Rights: 1. The site supervisor has the right to be made aware of the Practicum/Internship requirements. 2. The site supervisor has the right to expect the Counselor Candidate’s regular and punctual attendance for counseling sessions, supervision and other site related activities. 3. The site supervisor has the right to evaluate the Counselor Candidate’s performance based on the stated criteria in the School Counseling Program Handbook. 4. The site supervisor has the right to expect the Counselor Candidate to follow directives when they are given. 5. The site supervisor, in conjunction with the faculty supervisor, has the right to reprimand candidates whose behavior is not consistent with the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). The site supervisor has the right to consultation with the faculty supervisor and the Practicum/Internship/internship liaison on issues relevant to the Counselor Candidate. Responsibilities: 1. The site supervisor has the responsibility of working with the Counselor Candidate in planning the most appropriate learning experience within the approved school site. 2. The site supervisor has the responsibility to contact the faculty supervisor in the event a Counselor Candidate is not performing as would be expected of a beginning professional counselor. 3. The site supervisor has the responsibility to clearly state expectations, requirements and evaluation criteria. 4. The site supervisor has the responsibility to inform Counselor Candidates of the ethical responsibilities and standards of the Counseling profession and specifically regarding the role and function of the counselor within the approved school site. 5. The site supervisor has the responsibility to inform Counselor Candidates of legal issues related to the profession and regarding the approved school site’s policies and procedures (e.g., confidentiality, duty to warn and protect particularly regarding suspected child abuse and neglect). 6. The site supervisor has the responsibility to ensure that Counselor Candidates provide adequate disclosure so that clients make informed decisions about entering and continuing in counseling. 7. The site supervisor has the responsibility to schedule weekly individual supervision with the Counselor Candidate. Based on the needs of both the individual Counselor Candidate and client issues, supervision may be more frequent. Ultimately, the site supervisor is responsible for issues pertaining to clients. 8. The site supervisor has the responsibility to provide feedback to Counselor Candidates regarding their skill development and course grade a regular interval during the term. 9. The site supervisor has the responsibility to inform the Counselor Candidate and the faculty supervisor, at the earliest possible time, if work is not satisfactory and to detail specific behavioral expectations which can lead to improvement. I agree to supervise the School Counseling Clinical Experience of __________________________. As the site supervisor, I understand that I must see that this Counselor Candidate is provided with the clinical experiences at my site that will allow him or her to meet the requirements set forth in the handbook for the course he or she is enrolled; Practicum or Internship Experience I, II, or III. I understand my rights and responsibilities as the site supervisor as outlined in this document. I will do my best to ensure that the training experiences that are provided will assist the professional and personal development of the Counselor Candidate I am supervising. I understand that the University of Dayton, the Counselor Candidate, or myself has the right to terminate the Practicum or Internship I, II, or III Experience if the continuation of such a relationship will prove detrimental to the operation of the school site or students being served by the site or Counselor Candidate.
