Course Description

Senior English is a year-long course that integrates writing for a variety of purposes and audiences with literature study. Writing includes a focus on college and career-ready skills, including informative, argumentative, narrative, and research models. Universal themes in literature are explored in a variety of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama selections. We will be using the district issued British Literature textbook and supplemental materials and online articles.

Welcome to Skyline and 1:1!

We are so excited that your student will be joining us at Skyline and participating in our 1:1 student device initiative this year!

1:1 simply means that each student is given a laptop computer to use for the school year. This device will provide kids with the ability to do their work at school or at home; whenever and where ever they may be. It will allow them to make up work if they are absent, potentially before the work is due. Most importantly, it gives them the tool that will prepare them for a lifetime of success -- to follow their passion and fulfill their dreams. Your student will be instructed in traditional content, but also in best practices and procedures for using these mobile devices. They will develop confidence and competency with technology which will serve them well both in post secondary education and also future employment. Be assured that we at Skyline are learning, too! Digital Citizenship will be taught, practiced and enforced. Come join us and join the fun!

Notebooks and Supplies

Unless otherwise directed, the student is required to bring the following materials to class every day:

Notebook with a supply of college ruled loose-leaf paper

Blue or black ink pen

Laptop

Course Activities and Assignments

LITERATURE

The focus of this course is British literature, including poetry, short story, drama, non-fiction, and novel. Some works we will study are Beowulf, Le Morte d’Arthur, Canterbury Tales, Hamlet,

Frankenstein or 1984, and possibly Sherlock Holmes.

WRITING

Students will be expected to participate in all types of writing assignments with an emphasis on the following writing modes: informative, argumentative, narrative, and research. While writing, students must use the writing process and evaluate their own and each other’s work using the 6 traits of writing. They will also review and refine grammar and sentence fluency skills. Students must be comfortable with MLA formatting as well as the basic structure and composition of an essay.

VOCABULARY

Students will be expected to learn vocabulary that accompanies each unit. They will practice vocabulary words on a weekly basis with quizzes on Fridays. Students are expected to use these words and skills in their writing and speech.

PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS

Students will complete projects and prepare presentations both individually and in groups.

Most research projects done in class will require an oral presentation.

TESTS

Exams may be in the form of multiple choice, short answer, or essay. Unit exams will be announced at the end of the unit. Final exams, usually cumulative, will occur at the end of each semester.

VIDEOS

During the course of the year the following videos may be watched in class. Your signature on this syllabus will count as your permission for your child to view any of these videos. I will keep signatures in my file.

Hamlet (Mel Gibson version) Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

BBC King Arthur documentary Schama’s history of Britain

Any other video resources may include movies that are rated G, PG, and PG-13. These movies intended to enrich the learning experience.

EXTRA CREDIT

A limited amount of extra credit will be offered during this course. Extra credit will not be a substitute for completing assignments. In other words, extra credit will not “save” a low grade.

Classroom Procedures and Routines

PARTICIPATION

Students can receive a maximum of 50 points for a typical five day school week. Daily points will be broken down accordingly:

10 points daily

8 points=Class participation/behavior

2 points=Being on time to class

Students can lose class participation/behavior points for multiple reasons such as: being off task, excessive off topic talking, cell phone out at inappropriate times, rude remarks to teacher or other classmates, etc. Essentially behaviors that are disruptive to the student’s learning or the learning of the other students in the classroom will be worthy of a point deduction.

If a student is tardy to class, two points will automatically be taken off for the day.

Consequences

 If a student is tardy five or more times, he/she will be referred to administration.

 If a student is reprimanded three times or more for inappropriate cell phone use, he/she

will be referred to administration.

ABSENCES

You are responsible for any material covered during and absence. That means that you must get the notes from someone in class and then meet with me if you have any questions. This must be done upon your return to school. If you miss and in-class assignment, you must make it up within one week of your absence or make alternative arrangements with me.

GRADING

Grades are available online! Please see the attendance office for registration and sign in information. Grades will be figured by total points. If you get 90% of the points, you get an A. They will accumulate the entire semester, so work hard all semester.

TUTORING

If you have a question, need help with an assignment, want to review for an upcoming test, need make-up work, or want to discuss your grade: don’t hesitate to come see me! I am usually available any time after 7:30 and after school by appointment. Your success is important to me.

LATE WORK

Excessive late work will no longer be accepted. Each student will receive five late passes for the quarter. No late passes may be used on assignments in the writing category. One pass will allow you to receive full credit on the assignment. The other four late assignment passes will be for half credit only.

In the real world, late work is not acceptable. To begin teaching you this important life skill, late work will not become a habit in class. You only get the five passes. Passes that are stolen or given away will not be taken. A record of the passes you use will be kept. If you lose your passes you will not receive any replacements. You have been warned.
