Circulating Books, Electronic Books, and U.S. Government Documents
To find circulating books, as well as electronic books and U.S. government online documents, on wide-ranging
topics using your key words or ideas:
 Go to the Kean University Library’s home page located at http://library.kean.edu.
 Click Books, E-books, Videos, & More to access the Kean Catalog.
 Type your key words in the search box underneath Find This:
 Limit your search results to particular types of records (such as, Main Collection books, Reference
Collection books, or U.S. Government Online Document) by selecting an option from the Limit Your Search
menu.
 Click Search.
 Evaluate your search results.
 Make note of the Library Location designation for any titles of interest. A designation of Main Collection
means that the book is a circulating title, while Reference Collection means that the book does not
circulate. A designation of U.S. Government Online Document or Electronic Resource means that the item is
available online; you may access the material online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink
next to the words Linked Resource.
 Make note of the call number and status for any Main Collection titles of interest. When a Main Collection
book’s Status is Available, this means that the book is not checked out. Circulating titles are located in the
Main Collection on the second and third floors of the Kean University Library.

To start using the Library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the
Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu). Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized
in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by
subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases. [Note:
When you are off-campus, you will be asked to enter your Kean Library bar code after you click on a database name.
Your bar code is located on the back of your Kean University photo ID card.]
PAIS International











To search PAIS International for scholarly articles using your key terms:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.
Click PAIS International (ProQuest).
Type your key terms in the search box.
Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms.
Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of
the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to
retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance,
type:
“municipal budget*” and process*
Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words,
scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly journals.
Click the search button.
Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is
available online for a specific item, you will see a Full text link, a Full text - PDF link, or
both immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.
E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Email located at the top left-hand side of
your screen.
If full-text link options are not present, click Find a copy, then click TOUR to check the

Select databases pertinent to your research topic, such as Academic Search Premier,
Business Source Premier, CINAHL with Full Text, ERIC, Newspaper Source Plus, Regional
Business News, and/or SocINDEX with Full Text.
Click Continue.
Type your key terms in the search box.
Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms.
Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of
the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to
retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance,
type:

Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words,

available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links
immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click
one of these links to view the full-text article.
E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located on
the right-hand side of your screen.
If full-text link options are not present, click the TOUR button to check the availability of
full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

To search SAGE Journals Online for scholarly articles using your key terms:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.
Click SAGE Journals Online.
Type your key terms in the box next to Search All Journals.
Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the “and”
operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or”
operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped
terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles
with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:
affordable hous* and municipal*
Click Go.
Result: The first 10 retrieved citations will be displayed. For any item that shows the
message Article Available on the left-hand side of the screen, click the Full Text (PDF) link
immediately below the item to view the full-text article.
E-mail the full-text article you are viewing by clicking E-mail this article to a colleague on
the right-hand side of your screen.
If you do not see the Article Available message, search for the journal in the Periodicals List
to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library
databases.
To search JSTOR for scholarly articles:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter J on the alphabetical menu.
Click JSTOR.
Click Search to access the Advanced Search form.
Type your key terms in the first and second search boxes.
Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the
terms. Use the “OR” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not
necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that
contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to
retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example,
type:
municipal* AND budget* AND affordable hous*
Click Search.
Result: the first 25 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click PDF to view the full-text
article.
E-mail selected article citations by clicking Email Citations at the top of the results list.
From the Citation Format drop-down menu select printer-friendly, fill out the rest of the
email form, and click Send.

To search LexisNexis Academic for law reviews, case law, statutes, and regulations:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter L on the Jump to menu.
Click LexisNexis Academic.
Locate the blue buttons along the left-hand side of the screen, and click the button labeled
US Legal.
Select a category from the list along the left-hand side of the screen. For instance, select
Federal & State Cases; Shepard’s Citations; Landmark Cases; Supreme Court Briefs; Federal
Statutes, Codes & Regulations; State Statutes, Codes & Regulations; Law Reviews; Legal
Reference, and more. For instance, click Federal & State Cases.
Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third search box(es).
Use the “And” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms.
Use the “Or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of
the grouped terms). Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases.
Use the exclamation point (!) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles
with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:
First search box: “state police”
Second search box: "racial profil!"
Use the Specify Date drop-down menu to select a date or date range.
Select a specific court or state from the Jurisdiction drop-down menu.
Click Search.
Result: The first 25 retrieved document titles will be displayed. Click the title to access
the full-text document.
E-mail the document you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located
in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
To search HeinOnline for articles and documents from the Political Science Journals
(Plus), U.S. Presidential Library, and U.S. Supreme Court Library collections:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter H on the alphabetical menu.
Click HeinOnline: The Modern Link to Legal History.
Click Log in to HeinOnline (below Subscriber & Trial Access on the right-hand side of the
screen).
Select a library from the Subscribed Libraries menu on the left-hand side of the screen to
access a list of the publications included within the library. For example, click Political
Science Journals (Plus) to see a list of the journals and law reviews included within this
library collection.
Click the Search tab on the toolbar to access a basic search form.
Type your key term(s) in the Search box, then click the magnifying glass icon to the right
of the search box.
Alternatively, click Field Search to access a search form that will enable you to combine
search terms.
Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third boxes.

Oxford Handbooks Online
In the box to the left of each search box, select the field in which you would like to search
for your terms. For instance, click Text to the left of a search box in order to have the
database search for your terms within full-text articles.
Click Search.
Result: Retrieved article or document titles will be displayed. Examine retrieved items.
Click an item’s title to view the first page of the full-text document (click the arrow at the
bottom of the screen to proceed to the second page, and so on), or click View Matching
Text Pages to see a list of the pages within the document that contain your search term(s).
To view a page image of the full-text document, click Print/Download Options, then click
Print/Download in the box labeled Print Current section (make sure the Format menu is set
as PDF), then click Open.
Save the article you are viewing by clicking Save on the Adobe Reader toolbar.
To search PublicADMINISTRATIONetbase (CRCnetBASE) for full-text essays from
electronic (e-book) reference books focusing on public administration topics:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.
Click PublicADMINISTRATIONetbase (CRCnetBASE).
Click a subject listed under the Browse Content heading in order to access a list of
reference book titles focusing on the subject area, then click a title from the list in order to
access the full-text content of that book.
Alternatively, type your key terms in the search box in the top right-hand corner of the
screen. For example, type: public manag* and change*
Click Go.
Examine retrieved items. Click PDF w/links or Hi-Res PDF links to access retrieved book
chapters.


To search Oxford Handbooks Online for full-text essays from electronic (e-book)
handbooks focusing on business and management topics:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter O on the alphabetical menu.
Click Oxford Handbooks Online -- Business and Management (Oxford University Press).
Click a title listed under the heading The Oxford Handbooks of… in order to access the fulltext content of that handbook.
Alternatively, type your key terms in the search box. For example, type:
public manag* and ethic*
Click Search.
Examine retrieved items. Click Full Text links to access retrieved chapters and books.








To search Oxford Reference for facts, figures, definitions, as well as “in-depth,
scholarly articles” from Oxford reference books:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter O on the alphabetical menu.
Click Oxford Reference (Oxford University Press).
Type search terms in the Search box. For instance, type: public management
Click the magnifying glass icon to run the search.
Examine retrieved items. Click a title to access the full text for any relevant results.

Type your key terms in the basic search box.
Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms.
Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*)
as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of
its possible word endings. For example, type:

Click the magnifying glass icon to run the search.
Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click either the View Text or
PDF link immediately below the item to view the full-text article.
E-mail an article from the View Text option by clicking E-mail toward the top-left corner
of the screen.
To search Sage Knowledge for encyclopedia and other reference book articles using
your key terms:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter S on the Jump to menu.
Click Sage Knowledge.
Type your key terms in the search box. For example, type: public admin*
Click the magnifying glass icon to run the search.
The results list will include links to reference books (labeled as Encyclopedia, Handbook, or
Dictionary) and to articles (labeled as Encyclopedia Entry or Handbook Chapter). Click an
article title to view a full-text encyclopedia entry or handbook chapter. Click a link to an
encyclopedia or handbook to browse the entire e-book.
E-mail an article by clicking the envelope icon toward the top right corner of the screen.
