EN 07 Vocabulary- Writing Process/Paragraphs
1. prewriting
n. brainstorming and generating ideas for writing about; listing,
mapping, free writing, etc.
2. drafting
v. putting ideas onto paper; writing a first draft
3. revise
v. checking for clear ideas and organization; adding in or deleting
information
4. proofreading/editing
v. looking for convention errors; checking spelling, capitalization,
grammar, etc.
5. publishing/presentation
v. writing a final draft; sharing writing with an audience
6. conventions
n. spelling, capitalization, grammar, and usage
7. ideas/content
n. clear, specific, and original topics, thoughts, and details
8. voice
n. the personality of the writing; sounds like a real person and stays
true to the purpose
9. organization
n. the logical order of the writing; clear beginning, middle, and end
10.word choice
n. specific and accurate vocabulary usage; no vague or dead word
usage
11. sentence fluency
n. variety in sentence structure and beginnings to create a fluidity to
the writing; no run-ons or sentence fragments
12. rubric
n. grading guide or tool to score a piece of writing
13. paragraph
five or more sentences focused on a single topic,
always indented
14. topic sentence
usually first sentence of paragraph, introduces and narrows topic to
manageable size
15. supporting details
at least three per paragraph, includes details and examples, tie directly
to topic sentence
16. transition
words or phrases that connect ideas, used to continue or show a shift in
the writing, connect sentences and increase sentence fluency
17. sentence
complete thought comprised of a subject and a predicate, must begin
with a capital letter and end with end punctuation
18. fragment
an incomplete sentence, either not a complete thought or missing a
subject or predicate
19. concluding sentence
usually the last sentence of the paragraph restates topic using different
words than topic sentence
20. indent
space to the right of the left hand margin which indicates the beginning of
each new paragraph
21. subject
the main who or what of each sentence
22. predicate
the action or state of being of the word
