Required Materials
REQUIRED TEXT: Intermediate Algebra, 3rd ed, Carson and Jordan (ISBN 9780321607119), Addison
Wesley. There is also a companion Student Solutions Workbook by Emily Keaton (ISBN
9780321626943) which is quite useful if you have problems (all odd problems are worked).
Other material: GRAPH PAPER will be used. A scientific computer is useful for some of the topics.
NOTE: Computers, cell phones, or their equivalent are not allowed for tests.
Student Responsibilities
Attend class - If you have three unexcused absences, you are subject to a WF (F). Email me prior to the next
class if you cannot attend with a valid excuse or it will be unexcused.
Pay attention in class and ask questions if you have them. The is no such thing as a dumb question.
Complete your homework. Anticipate that the homework will take about 9 hours a week (2 hours per hour of
credit per week). Keep up to date.
I check my e-mail ( jcallaghan@mccneb.edu )at least twice a day and should respond to most of your questions
the same day.
If you decide to drop the class, you must phone Metro at 457-5231 as there is no longer an IW.
Tests
There will be five end of unit in-class tests.
There will also be a Departmental Assessment Test the last day of class covering the whole course.
Tests will be closed book, closed notes, no computer, no phone, no help from others.
If you use worksheets, turn them in with the test as I will give partial credit. Your worksheets must be legible
and the problem number clearly identified. Correct answers with no work will not necessarily get
full credit.
Tests will be graded and returned the next class. We will review the complete test at the beginning of the
class. The tests and worksheets must be returned to me either that evening or (with permission) the
next class.
Tests if Class Cancelled
If class is cancelled for some reason or I am unavailable on a day that a test is scheduled, the test will be given
at the next class.
Similarly, if the class before any test is cancelled, the test will be given as scheduled, but there will be no
problems on the missed section.
Criteria for Final Grade
If you do not take all the tests, you will get either an F or a WF.
Each of the five unit tests is worth 100 points.
The Departmental Test is worth 50 points.
I will determine your average by adding the grades and dividing by 5.5 .

90.0 A
80.0-89.9
B
70.0-79.9
C
60.0-69.9
D

Make-Up Tests
Getting a make-up test is not automatic.
If you are unavailable for a test with a relatively good reason, email me within 24 hour with the reason why
and if I concur, I will coordinate a make-up test for you.
I will have the make-up available at the Testing Center at the South campus. You must make arrangements
with them (402-738-4613) at least 24 hours in advance. I expect that you will complete the make-up
within 10 days of the original test. (Can also be taken at Bellevue West Mon-Thu 06:00-08:15 PM).
If there are problems that cannot be resolved with the instructor, you may notify the Division Chairperson
and request that he negotiate with the instructor.

I do not give retakes in Math 1310.
