REQUIRED MATERIALS:
The textbook for this class is: “Intermediate Algebra” by Carson/Jordan, 4th Edition, Pearson. You will be
required to complete the Homework and Quizzes online using MyLabsPlus (MLP). In order to do this, you will
need to have a computer with internet access and basic technical/computer skills. Even if you purchase a
textbook elsewhere, you will also be required to purchase a MLP registration packet containing the access code
and register in MLP.
Choose ONE of the following options for purchasing the required MyLabsPlus access and text:

Purchase an MLP registration code packet online (lowest cost option) or at the bookstore. This option
provides access to the online textbook; it is not necessary to have a paper text.


2.
Presentation of new material and topics.
3.
Discussion of the lecture material.
4.
In-class time for practice and tests.
COURSE ASSESSMENT
TESTS:
 There will be five closed-book tests, worth 50% of your grade, given during the term. Each test will be
announced in advance. There are no retake options.
 There will be a Departmental Final Exam, worth 10% of your grade. It is a closed book test that consists of
15 - 20 multiple choice questions administered during the last week of the class.
 The combined average of the tests and the final must be 60% or above to achieve a grade of C or above in
the class. All tests must be attempted to pass the class.
 Students must be present for tests. Make-up tests will only be given in the case of extreme emergencies and/or
only if the student has made arrangements prior to the test.
 If an emergency arises, a student must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the test to let the instructor
know of the circumstances for missing the test. The student must make arrangements to take the make-up test
prior to the next class meeting.
 A 10% penalty will be assessed on any test taken after the scheduled testing day.

QUIZZES:
 MyLabsPlus Quizzes are worth 20% of your grade.
 There are up to 2 attempts for each Quiz. If you are not happy with the first score, you may retake it. The
highest score will be recorded. No late submissions will be accepted, so make sure your quiz is completed on the
due date.
 You have a fixed time to complete quizzes. Once you start a quiz, you must finish it. If you try to open another
page, MyLabsPlus may close and you will not be able to continue.
 Quiz scores are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in the MyLabsPlus grade book.
HOMEWORK (HW)
 There is one HW assignment in MyLabsPlus for each required section of the textbook. While the homework is
submitted online, you are expected to keep a hard copy notebook of all of your work for solving the homework.
The notebook should come to class with you each day, and I may ask to check the notebook at anytime.
 MyLabsPlus HW is worth 15% of your grade.
 It is recommended that you begin to complete each HW assignment as soon as you have studied the specific
section of the textbook, however the actual due dates are listed on the syllabus.
 You have unlimited time to complete each HW and you can resume numerous times until you complete it. Each
problem may be worked up to three times by clicking Similar Exercise.
 Please make sure that your homework is submitted by the due date. Late assignments may be submitted, but
MyLabsPlus will deduct 25% from the final score of that assignment. I will not extend the due date on
homework, if it is submitted after the due date the 25% reduction will apply.
 Click Submit Work when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. You may revisit the same section
anytime up to the due date and continue where you left off. Make sure you click Submit Work each time you
need to leave.
 Homework scores are automatically graded and recorded in the MyLabsPlus grade book.
ATTENDANCE:
 Attendance for this class is required. At the beginning of the term, your attendance score is 100%. For each class
period that you are absent, your attendance grade drops 5%. There is no penalty for the first absence.
FINAL GRADE SUMMARY:
There are 5 categories that you will be graded on and they are weighted as follows.
50% = Unit Tests
10% = Final
15% = HW, submitted via MyLabsPlus
20% = Quizzes, submitted via MyLabsPlus
5% = Attendance
GRADE SUMMARY:
A = 90 - 100%
B = 80 - 89%
C = 70 - 79%
D = 60 - 69 %
F = Below 60%
MAINTENANCE OF STUDENT RECORDS
Graded material will be returned within 2 class periods of it being collected. Graded tests will be kept on file in the
instructor’s office for one quarter following the quarter in which the course was completed. This is in accordance with
Course Grade Appeal Procedures outlined in the Metropolitan Community College Catalog.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:
Regular attendance of classes is absolutely essential for this course. Faithfully attending class is the only way students can
successfully complete this course. If an unavoidable circumstance, like family or medical emergencies, does arise, the student
must contact the instructor in advance, by phone or email, to explain why they must be absent. The student is also
responsible for all work due the day of the absence and the current assignment when they return to class. Tardiness is also
not acceptable. If the student is more than 15 minutes late to class, it will be counted as an absence for that day. Four tardies
( < 15 minutes) will count as one absence.
Each student begins with 100 attendance points. For each absence (or accumulation of 4 tardies) that score will go down 5
points. There is no penalty for the first absence.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
The student should:
1.
Read the textbook material ahead of time.
2.
Participate in class discussions by answering questions asked by the instructor, and asking questions.
3.
Bring your assignment to each class with all problems completed or with your questions if it is not
completed.
4.
Use PENCIL on tests and quizzes.
5.
Be respectful of other students and the instructor. Avoid disruptive behavior and profanity in the classroom.
6.
Turn off cell phones and any musical devices. Texting during class is unacceptable behavior.
When Help is Needed:
The student should:
1. Contact the instructor as soon as there is a problem. If a student seeks help from the instructor, they must bring
their attempted homework, class notes, and textbook.
2. View the videotapes of the lecture material and use the software available in MyMathLab and the Math Center.
3. Work with classmates, friends, tutors or Math Center personnel. Form study groups. The instructor is also
available for help outside of class. Use all available resources.
ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY:
To confirm each student’s eligibility to remain registered for the class, the instructor will officially report
attendance/participation on or before the Census Date. Students in this section of Intermediate Algebra must attend a
class meeting by Tuesday March 15, 2016.
