Topics include frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability and probability distribution, sampling concepts, estimating means and percentages, and hypothesis testing. COURSE PREREQUISITES: Within two years prior to beginning the course, either successful completion of MATH 1310 with a grade of C or better, or MCC placement test. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course each student will be able to: 1. Organize, summarize, and report upon the significance and characteristics of a set of data. 2. Identify whether a probabilistic event is simple or compound and then calculate the probability that this event will occur. 3. Conduct appropriate hypothesis tests and draw conclusions based upon the results of that hypothesis test. CLASS STRUCTURE: The daily class period will consist of review of material and questions from the previous class, presentation and discussion of new material, and time for practice and tests. REQUIRED MATERIALS: You must have daily computer and internet access (Microsoft Office including Word and Excel) and basic computer skills. You must purchase MyLabsPlus access and register in MyLabsPlus (MLP). You must have a scientific calculator. A calculator with a Stat package will be helpful, but is not required. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK ASSIGNMENTS: Daily assignments must be completed following the due dates as listed in the Schedule of Assignments at the end of this syllabus. Work for all assignments must be kept in a notebook which must be brought to class each period. MyLabsPlus Homework (15% of quarter grade) Homework assignments are not timed and may be resumed numerous times until they are completed. You will be allowed up to three attempts for each question. Click Save when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. You may revisit an assignment any time up to the due date and continue working if you click on Save each time you need to leave. Homework scores are recorded in the MLP grade book. To review a homework assignment, go to the grade book and then click on Review. Tests (75% of your quarter grade) There will be 4 in-class chapter tests. Tests may NOT be retaken. Attendance (10% of your quarter grade) At the beginning of the term, your attendance score is 100%. For each class session that you are absent, your attendance score drops 5%. MISSED TEST PROCEDURES: If a student is unable to take a test at the scheduled time, the student must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the date the test was administered in order to qualify to take the test. The missed test must be taken prior to the next class meeting. Each student is allowed to make up ONE missed test with no penalty. After that, 10 points will be deducted from tests not taken at the scheduled time. You must call the testing center at (402) 537-3803 to make an appointment to take the test. You must have a photo I.D. and arrive at least 2 hours prior to close to take your test. The Testing Center is closed from noon-1pm. GRADING POLICY: The graded assignments are weighted as follows. 75% = In-class tests 15% = MyLabsPlus homework 10% = Attendance GRADE SCALE FOR THIS CLASS: A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = below 60% MAINTENANCE OF STUDENT RECORDS: Graded materials will be returned within two class sessions unless the instructor has an unforeseen emergency. Tests will be on file in the instructor’s office for six months after the quarter in which the course was completed. This is in accordance with Course Grade Appeal Procedures outlined in the Metropolitan Community College Catalog. Take notes on the lecture material and read the textbook material. 2. Participate in class disc xussions by asking questions, offering ideas, and answering questions asked by the instructor. 3. Keep up with assignments as new material builds on previous material. Do not get behind! 4. Bring assignments to class with all problems attempted and questions for ones you could not complete. 5. Be respectful of other students and the instructor. 6. Silence and put away cell phones and other electronic devices.
