Welcome to the Wilson Band Program! All fifth and sixth grade students are eligible to receive free instruction on a band instrument in the Mesa Public School system. Researchers continue to provide us with evidence that an education in music is of great benefit to our children. Through his or her participation in band, your child will develop such skills as self-discipline, eye-to-hand coordination, and artistic expression. His or her spatial-temporal skills will improve. Even his or her academic achievement will improve as measured by standardized math, science and language tests! Please support your child in his or her musical endeavors by encouraging regular athome practice, juggling schedules when necessary, and attending all concerts and other band functions. Behind every successful musician is a supportive parent. It is very important to me that your child receives a quality music education. If you have any questions or concerts, please be in touch with me. My school phone number is 472-9259 and my email address is jrhuyett@mpsaz.org. Sincerely, Janel Huyett, band teacher General Information Schedule: Band students meet for two 30-minute classes each week. Students are excused from their regular classroom and will walk to the band room for instruction. Please help your student to remember to bring his or her instrument on each and every band day. The band schedule for this year is as follows: Chucri: Alvarez: Jernigan: Jones: Zak: Yardley: Wolf: Monday/Thursday Monday/Thursday Monday Thursday Wednesday/Friday Tuesday/Thursday Tuesday/Thursday Tuesday/Thursday 12:00 – 12:30 12:35 – 1:05 12:35 – 1:05 10:50 – 11:20 12:00 - 12:30 1:10 – 1:40 1:10 – 1:40 1:45 – 2:15 Expectations: In order to succeed in band, students must…. 1. Come to every band class on time (unless absent from school), even if they have forgotten their instrument or book. 2. Bring his/her instrument, book, and sheet music to every class. 3. Practice at home an average of 15 minutes 5 days per week. 4. Commit to one full year of band membership. 5. Attend all performances (evening performances and daytime assemblies). Uniform: In order for our bands to create a uniform appearance on stage it is important for us to dress alike. For concerts, students are asked to wear black on the bottom (black slacks or a black skirt) and a band t-shirt. T-shirts must be tucked in at all times. Band t-shirts will be loaned to students prior to each concert and must be returned following each performance. Calendar of Performances and Events: Concerts are the most important and the most fun part of being in band. Please mark your calendar now with the dates below so that we can count on 100% participation at all of this year’s performances. Each band student is like a valuable pearl strung on a beautiful necklace. If even one pearl is missing, the necklaces beauty is diminished. If just one of our valuable student musicians is missing from a concert, our music will not sound a beautiful as when we are all in attendance. Please commit to attending every concert!
