Name: ___________________ Date: _______ Period: __ Morality Course Description and Requirements Fall Semester 2011 General Information Each student is responsible to take notes during class presentations and fulfill all course requirements, When absent from class, students must make up work, acquire notes, and inquire about assignments and tests, etc. Student participation is necessary for this course to "work." I will try to encourage you to participate in every way I can, but it is up to you to make this class either come alive or wither away. Physical presence alone does not constitute participation. A student’s success in this course is in direct proportion to his or her ability to participate fully. Course Content It is essential for each student to contribute his or her insights and perspectives on various issues such as, but not limited to, issues of personal integrity connected with values or vices and such as honesty, respect, or the taking of another’s property; school and cyber issues such as gossip, cyber bullying or "e-plagiarism"; local and national issues such as the death penalty, religious tolerance, human cloning, the ethical treatment of animals; life and death issues such as stem cell research, war, etc. Course content will also include the language of morality including discussion of the cardinal virtues, a comparative view of major Religions and “The Golden Rule,” general standards that can guide human conduct and the insights such study provides to our moral perspective. Course content includes discussion on the sources that impact our moral awareness and decision-making process including the perspective of Sacred Scripture and Tradition as understood by the Catholic Church. Tests There are tests throughout each quarter. There will be a cumulative final exam. Any student who misses tests or final exam due to a legitimate absence is expected make arrangements to take a make-up on the day he or she returns to class. If a student cuts class or is illegally absent from school, no make-up will be given. At the discretion of the teacher, some other factors which may affect a student’s grade are: 1. excessive lateness to or absence of class 2. lack of respect for classmates’ opinions 3. disruptive behavior 4. lack of respect for the teacher 5. violation of the Honor Code Grading for each quarter Tests = 40% Assignment 1 = 20% Assignment 2 = 20% Class Participation = 20% Additional Information 1) Unless excused by Mr. Grimm, any missed tests or assignment(s) will each receive a grade of zero. 2) A late assignment will be penalized 10 points for each school day late unless you are legitimately absent from school. Extra credit will be available for early submission of an assignment. 3) Please speak with me, on a timely basis, for extraordinary circumstances so that we can work together to work towards some kind of solution. 4) You may not use my mailbox or desk to deposit any assignment. All assignments must be given to Mr. Grimm by hand. 5) Assignment description will be provided in class.
