Spanish Writing Assignment and Rubric:
DUE MONDAY 23 MARCH 2009:
The assignment is based on Workbook page 70 – Write a 10-sentence paragraph (about 100
words) about your family (real or imaginary). Describe your family. Include their names and
relationships, where they live and what they are like. However, do not write it in your workbook.
Instead, hand it in on a separate piece of paper (typed, preferably) and make sure you have at
least 10 sentences (about 100 words).
This must be a cohesive paragraph, with sentences that flow into one another. Do not just list 10
random sentences. Please keep it as simple as possible. Try writing in Spanish from memory,
then go back and fill in missing words later. Do not attempt to write in English first – it will
make it extremely difficult for you because you do not know as much Spanish as English and
you will run into trouble. Don’t try to impress me – keep it simple. And please, please, please do
not use online translators for more than one word at a time! It will sound terrible and,
technically, you did none of the work. If this is the case, I will return the paper to you asking you
to rewrite the entire paragraph yourself, and will deduct 10 points automatically from your final
score.
Since there must be at least 10 sentences, each sentence will be worth 10 points.
10 – a complete sentence in which all subjects and verbs agree, all nouns and adjectives agree,
and it conveys meaning in Spanish.
7-9 – a complete sentence where a native Spanish speaker can understand everything you are
trying to say, but there are a few errors involving noun-adjective agreement and misuse of certain
prepositions.
4-6 – a sentence in which the subjects and verbs do not agree, in addition to other grammatical
errors, but which a native Spanish speaker can still deduce its meaning.
1-3 – a fragment of a sentence with many errors in subject-verb usage and other grammatical
errors, and which a native Spanish speaker would struggle to understand its meaning.
0 – an incomplete sentence in which the meaning is incomprehensible.
