1st Quarter Project
Religion 9- Mr. Vogelson
As we have learned in the creation stories in Genesis, God gave humans dominion over the earth. With this great
responsibility, humans are called to be Stewards of the Earth- to care for God’s creation and make sure all people
share in its goodness.
We live in a culture and nowadays that is very “disposable” and is dominated by the consumption of things. The
question becomes, how aware are we of our own consumption and what are the by-products of that consumption?
PART 1
WHAT TO DO: Create a Steward of Creation Journal over a 5 day period during the next 12 days
HOW TO DO: Keep a record of what you consume or use during the span of a day- keep track of what you do
with the by-products: waste, trash, packaging, etc.
DAY 1 and DAY 2- Observe your regular habits and record them.
Ex: a) Today at lunch I brought a sandwich in a Ziploc bag. I ate the sandwich and threw away the bag in
the garbage.
b) During class today I messed up on some notes, so I threw the page away.
Day 3- Reflect on what you usually do and the waste you create. Is there a way to reduce it? Come up
with a plan to adjust your habits so that they do a better job of caring for creation. Write this plan down.
What will you do?
DAY 4 and 5- Implement the plan. (Do what you said you were going to do) Record your consumption
now including your new habits.
Ex: a) Today at lunch I brought a sandwich in a reusable plastic container. I brought the container home
so I could bring my sandwich in it tomorrow.
b) During class today I messed up on some notes, since the page was unusable I made sure it went
into the recycling bin in my classroom.
PART 2
After the 5th day address these questions:
Were the new habits difficult? Explain Yes or No
Were you able to create less waste? How so?
After adjusting your habits, did you feel better about yourself? Explain Why
Had you ever noticed what you consumed on a daily basis before this project?
Did you changing yourself make you notice the habits of others?
PART 3
Write a prayer in thanksgiving for the Earth, its beauty and God giving us the responsibility to care for creation.
