Y O U A R E T O NO Teacher: Joan Janda Date: 9/11/09 Dept: Foreign Language INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL Over the course of the first and second quarters, I will foster incremental studentto-student interaction in the target language. Over the course of the third and fourth academic quarters, I will gently introduce and incorporate instructional technology in classroom instruction. INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL ACTION PLAN For the first half of the first quarter, my initial warm-up exercises and review classes will be fairly student-to-teacher-oriented, to build student self-confidence and strengthen my student knowledge-base. When students begin to hit their stride, toward mid-quarter, I will gently begin weaning them of teacher-dependent interaction to shift focus on conversation with peers, to further prepare them for comfortable real-life conversations with native Spanish-speakers on whatever level they can handle. Come third quarter, I will begin to integrate instructional technology in the classroom, assuming that I will be able to acquire the necessary equipment as long as I plan ahead. (This was a real stumbling block some years ago, when I first tried to work with Whiteboard (or was it Smart Board?), because the technology was in short supply.)) My intention is to do so with student “tech support” assistance from someone whose language skills may not yet be up to snuff, but whose tech-savvy nature will win the esteem of peers – and instructor. This will build the self-confidence and self-esteem of my “techie” and hopefully improve his relationship with teacher, class, and Spanish. (More than likely, there will be some “techie” rotation in each class.) This strategy will also serve to shift the spotlight from my own weaknesses to my students’ strengths. I think it’s important for students to know that I know that each of them has something over me, even though I can “beat them” in Spanish. At first, this technology will be integrated to address common writing “pitfalls” in their writing, by projecting student writing samples that require editing of a type that is very typical at their class level. (These samples, of course, will not bear the authors’ names). It will also be used to teach proper paragraphing, which I have observed is a weak point even for the cream of our crop. Of course, use of this technology will not be daily featured due to demand that outstrips our technology supply. But it will be appropriately incorporated now and then at all levels in the second semester, and pre-arranged observations will ensure no “wasted” drop-ins. CULTURAL GOAL Student involvement in school- and class-life will be fostered year-round by focusing on the student urge to contribute and stand out. ACTION PLAN FOR CULTURAL GOAL I have decided that this year, students will decorate our classroom themselves, either with work they have done themselves or with course-related materials that they find and choose to share with the class. Some of this might even be “extracredit”-eligible. And for sure, the display will rotate. I am also encouraging students to bring in class-appropriate pop recordings in Spanish (along with their typed out Spanish lyrics, which they are then to translate into English for the class). These songs will be incorporated into my classes for pronunciation practice and grammar review, foster student involvement and “ownership” of the academic experience, and hopefully light a fire in some of them to seek further exposure to Latino/-a recording artists and their work. SPIRITUAL GOAL AND ITS ACTION PLAN To foster a richer spiritual life for my students by: (a) sharing aspects of my own faith life with them; (b) incorporating scriptural elements in class on a weekly basis; and (c) exposing them to faith-stoking and emotionally stirring paintings that have become cornerstones of the world’s artistic heritage, thanks to the genius of Hispanic artists across the generations and across the globe.
