VARIETY Unity is quite boring VARIETY: Obvious, underlying feeling of unity, yet variations enliven the pattern. Shapes may repeat, but perhaps in different sizes; colors may repeat; but perhaps in different values. A point to remember is that, with a great variety of elements, a simple layout idea can give needed unity and is very effective. The “correct” balance between unity and variety -between control and spontaneous freedom- varies with the individual artist, with the theme or purpose, and eventually with the viewer.
