MA 07 Course Outline
MA07
Grade level: 7th
I Course description
The 7th grade course is a foundation course to prepare for high school work and is primarily devoted to
establishing what a function is and how to describe relationships in terms of a wide variety of functions.
The state standards and the IB requirements overlap for the most part and will be the focus of the
course work. A few IB topics not included in the state standards such as fractional exponents and some
regression will be included in the course.
II Aims and Objectives
The aims of the studying of algebra are to enable students to develop logical processes and skills needed
to deal with the relationships found in mathematics and expand these to deal with ideas outside of
mathematics. Students will be required to discuss data in multiple representations (verbal, equation,
graphically, table and written) and be able to transfer understanding between the various
representations.
III Topics
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Geometry
The Number Systems
Expressions and Equations
Statistics and Probability
IV Global Contexts
The six IB global contexts (Identities and Relationships, Scientific and Technical Innovation, Fairness and
Development, Orientation in space and time, Globalization and Sustainability, Personal and Cultural
Expression) will be integrated into the topics of study which will increase the level of real world
application of the pre-algebra material learned.
V Internationalism
The mathematical advances throughout history that apply to pre-algebra will be incorporated in the
class and since mathematics is truly a worldwide language these advances have been developed around
the world.
VI Teaching methods
A variety of teaching methods will be used. These include small group work, projects, class discussions,
use of graphing calculator, use of manipulatives and some lecture. Students will also keep notes and
write reflections of their learning experiences.
VII Assessment
Students will be ask to demonstrate their knowledge on both state standards and the four IB criterion
(Knowledge and Understanding, Investigating Patterns, Communication, Application to real world
concepts) The IB Criterion assessments will be used to measure progress towards mastery of these skills.
