Graduate Teaching Scheme 2015/16
Application Guidance Notes
As part of its commitment to providing opportunities for research students to gain teaching experience in the
course of their doctoral studies, the Faculty of Arts & Humanities offers a number of Graduate Teaching
Assistant positions (GTAs) each year, in various subject areas covered by the disciplines of the departments
at undergraduate level. The Graduate Teaching Scheme is designed to enable research students to contribute
to teaching and marking/assessment activities, within a structure that also offers training and support.
The number of GTA positions offered varies from year to year. It is unlikely that positions will be
available to every eligible student who applies and GTAs must be prepared to teach outside their specific
field/period. If you have questions about the available positions in your department please contact the
departmental office.
How to apply
You will need to use this form for applications for the Graduate Teaching Scheme. The deadline for receiving
applications is 02/03/2015. You need to ensure that all sections of the form (including the supervisor
recommendation) are completed by this deadline.
NB: By submitting an application form for the Graduate Teaching Scheme you are agreeing to participate
in any training, provided by the university, Faculty or department, that is deemed necessary for you to
undertake this role. All GTAs are required to complete the King’s Learning Institute’s course, Preparing to
Teach in Higher Education; any further training will be confirmed by your employing department.
Eligibility criteria

GTA positions are only available to existing research students registered in the Faculty of Arts &
Humanities.
Graduate students entering into the final year of research or those with ‘writing up’ status are eligible
to apply, but priority will be given to students entering into the second year of full-time research (or
the part-time equivalent) and/or those with no prior teaching experience in the School.
You need to be on track with your doctoral research and to obtain your supervisor’s approval.
Although the result of your upgrade may be pending at the time of application, your supervisor will
be asked to comment on your progress toward the upgrade.
All GTAs are required to complete the Preparing To Teach course offered by the King's Learning
Institute. You are strongly encouraged to take this course in the spring semester, the year prior to
beginning teaching.
