Summit Academy staff/student comments for the following question: Information about the Primary Years Programme (PYP) In the PYP, students learn about significant concepts through units of inquiry. The 6 transdisciplinary themes that guide units of inquiry and compose a year of study are: Who we are Where we are in place and time How we express ourselves How the world works How we organize ourselves Sharing the planet Units of inquiry interweave subject areas such as mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. This approach encourages students to make their own connections between what they learn in core subject areas and how it relates to the world around them. Talk with your child about what units they’ve completed and what unit they are currently working on. Here is student work recently completed through an IB unit: What does IB mean to you? IB is a more global perspective and emphasizes the connectedness of us all. Ms. Ford, 4th Grade Teacher IB is when we talk about being helpful, friendly and being nicer to other people. Sarah D. Rm 5, Kindergarten IB is what makes us such a great school. It means that we always try our best to learn about new things and to excel in all different subjects. Alicia A., Rm 15, 6th grader My teacher tells us to be kind. In kindergarten I won the award for being a risk-taker. Trinity V., Rm. 9, 1st grader IB is being a well-rounded, lifelong learner who sees the big picture in terms of themselves related to the world. IB individuals realize their actions have consequences and choose actions that are positive just for the sake of doing something positive. Mr. Andrews, Principal IB is when you learn about a certain unit and you study it down to its core. Trisha L., Rm 28, 5th grader To me, IB means understanding and respecting all kinds of people. It means that you show all of the IB learner profiles every day. Emma F., Rm 32, 4th grader
