Example- The Family Involvement Action Team will work together with teacher input in creating a school-wide
vocabulary list, tips, and interactive homework for parents to practice the words at home with their children. The
lists will be distributed during athletic events, concerts, family nights, transition night and the Book Fair. We will
put them in our newsletter, website, front office and the Parent Resource Center.

We will have a Family Reading Night to demonstrate various strategies to learn vocabulary words such as using
context clues, word structure, word analogies and fun activities such as Dictionary and Word sort games. Parent
Volunteers will help with the games. The school-wide vocabulary list will again be introduced and reviewed during
this event.

Example- We will hold quarterly classes for parents explaining what students need to know in math each quarter.
We will have a “Math Bowl” for students to compete and showcase their knowledge in Math. Parents will be invited
as audience members to this event. A student recognition page in the school newsletter will highlight students who
improve and excel in math.

Interactive homework will be provided by teachers for parents. The homework will consist of students explaining a
math standard to their parents. Our parent organization will support our math goal by purchasing calculators and
math material for parents to work with students. A local college is also providing college students to tutor students
after school.

Example- Provide translations services to parents for conferences, newsletters, parent leadership and all school
related parent meetings. Utilize Connect-Ed phone message system to keep parents informed of school events. We
will also create a resource directory to identify the available time and talents of parents and other volunteers to assist
teachers and school staff throughout the year. Parents will also be trained on how to access the MPS Parent Portal
throughout the year.

An Art Fair will be held for students and families where community artists demonstrate drawing and painting, music,
dance, and crafts and offer information on community-based art programs and museums. Prior to the Fair the
SIAC/FIAT committee will provide a spaghetti dinner combined with their meeting to encourage more parents to
participate in decision making.
