The Health Innovation Network (South London) has joined up with Music Mirrors to offer free training in the Music Mirrors communications and reminiscence resource. Individuals, community groups, organisations and educational establishments working with or for people with dementia within South London are invited to attend our Music Mirrors ‘train the trainer’ workshop, to support more people in South London with dementia in creating their own Music Mirrors. WHAT IS A MUSIC MIRROR? Music is a language beyond words: we understand and enjoy it without thinking, it changes mood and atmosphere, reminds us of people and places, expresses feelings too complex for words and even helps us move and speak more easily. If we have dementia, music can still open doors to feelings, memories and communication long after words have become difficult. Linked to our unique life story – earlier years, key events and people – music and sounds can help us to keep our sense of self and bring the past to life. But to use this potential we need a record, not so much of the music we enjoy now, but of what was important to us in earlier years. A unique way to spark memory. Music Mirrors enable people at an early stage of dementia to make their own simple toolkits of life story prompts, written in their own words with sounds and music embedded. These unique personal snapshots of identity and the music linked to it can easily be shared with family, friends and carers to comfort and spark memory throughout the journey with dementia. Visit the Music Mirrors website more information including film and examples of how music mirrors work http://www.musicmirrors.co.uk/ Workshops will be held at the Health Innovation Network’s offices in London Bridge on Tuesday March 22 and Tuesday April 26 – 9.30 – 12.30. Alternatively if you are an organisation or have a number of individuals interested we can come to your premises or venue.
