Edison News and Notes AzMERIT will be given spring 2015 to assess student mastery of Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards. On Monday, Nov. 3, the Arizona State Board of Education adopted a new statewide achievement test, Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching or AzMERIT, to replace AIMS. The Board did not adopt the PARCC test. At the elementary and junior-high levels, AzMERIT will be given in English Language Arts and Mathematics in third through eighth grade. At the high-school level, it will be an end-of-course test in English in ninth through 11th grade, and in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. Unlike AIMS, current tenth-grade and younger students will not have to pass AzMERIT to graduate. AzMERIT will be based on test items that match Arizona’s standards. The items will have a variety of formats—not just multiple-choice—that require students to demonstrate their knowledge. The test will be very rigorous and will allow for the comparison of Arizona students’ performance to students in 24 other states. The AzMERIT test can be given on paper or on a computer. The total testing times are “about 7 hours” per student. In contrast, the PARCC test was estimated to take 10 to 11 hours. The test will be given this spring, in a timeframe similar to AIMS (the exact dates have not been set yet). The Arizona Department of Education announcement stated, “The Board must still make decisions about how the results of the AzMERIT will be used for various accountability purposes including A-F School Letter Grades, Teacher and Principal Evaluations, Move on When Reading, and the potential use of End-of-Course results in high school course grades. At its December meeting, the Board is expected to discuss the establishment of a 'safe harbor' year for accountability measures.” We will keep you informed of the Board’s decision. The state has posted information about the new assessment on the ADE website. As more information becomes available, it will be posted on the Research & Evaluation website. Answers to frequently asked questions will also be posted on the R&E site. State Academic Testing The state of Arizona has selected the testing formats for replacing AIMS.
