Minutes
Present: Helene Loiselle, Andy Ray, Winsome Bennett, Clarence Canada, Roger Corriveau,
Deb Hall, Jim Johnson, Brenda Jones, Lazaro Camacho (for Gerald Jones), Aaron Powell,
Patti Riva, Iris Scammell, Annmarie Wise, Deborah Green, Brenda Schumpert, Jerry Reed.
Absent: Javier Garces, Kathleen Plinske, Larry Rosen
Co-Chair, Helene Loiselle, called the regular monthly meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
Minutes of the October 21, 2011 meeting were approved by consensus.
Helene introduced and welcomed Dr. Deborah Green as the new Director of Sustainability
and Co-chair of the Sustainability Committee serving with Co-chair Andy Ray.
Dan Manley, Project Manager and Jay Hood, Principal on Job, of AECOM presented the Green
Master Plan for the East Campus, which was developed with student input.
Clarence Canada, reported on Tree Campus USA stating that the College is beginning to see
fruit for our labor. We can meet their standards. National UCF Sessions are trying to bring
campuses to the table. The biggest hurdle is getting administration to the table. The heart of
the plan is to protect the trees and campus. We need more student involvement and a student
to serve on the Tree Committee.
Jerry Reed and Brenda Schumpert reported on the bat house prototype. Brenda reported that
we now have a budget. The next step is to decide how to fund the budget. There is an
Endowed Chair available, which Brenda will write an application for the Committee to submit.
She reported that there are six Chairs that fall within our area. We need to get the digital
equipment so we can get students involved right away. This is a component to their degree
that sets them apart from other students in their field. They will be using hardware and
software developed by other students. Brenda, Andy Ray and jerry Reed will meet and
strategize.
Transportation. Deborah explained that since the GHG emission from buildings are being
addressed well, she will form a task force subcommittee on transportation with Aaron Powell
and someone from Security. Zimride, a carpool program used by other schools may or may not
be cost effective for us. Deborah is still calling schools within Florida to see how they handle
their transportation issues. Aaron mentioned the idea of improving Lynx accessibility.
Larry Rosen was to report on the Wild Life Populations on our campuses, but was unable to be
at the meeting today. This item was tabled for the January meeting.
Brenda Schumpert reported on her search for an Academic champion saying, Elizabeth I.
Engram is not able to be a Champion at this time. Brenda feels we need one champion for each
campus. She is currently looking for someone on East Campus. She says we need a clear list of
what the expectations are of a champion. This action item was not assigned.
Bat Box. Brenda determined a possible soured of funding for the computerized bat box. Three
Endowed Chairs are available in Biology with money that could be used for this project. She,
Andy Ray and Jerry Reed will meet and strategize.
Deborah Green stated there are two time-sensitive campus/education awareness building
projects that need to be added to our agenda:
A. Learning Day Service work on campus with Non-profit groups-tentative ideas.
I. Orange Audubon-Leader, Andy Ray. Construct bird boxes (previously cut out wood)
and posts; Wood Duck, Flycatcher, Screech Owl and Bluebird.
II.
Florida Native Plant Society-Leader, Larry Rosen, Javier Garces, Clarence Canada.
Plant natives.
III.
Central Florida Invasive Species Management Area-Leader, Deborah Green.
Remove invasive.
IV. Deb Hall mentioned the “Gift for Learning” and “Give Kids the World”.
Edge workshops. Complete information on workshops by December 1, 2011, must be turned
in to Jenny Navarez.
