Principles of Illustration II
Syllabus
Melanie Huffman-Instructor
Principles of Illustration explores a variety of media, tools and supports as a means to communicate
ideas. Topics include an understanding of illustration as applicable to careers in graphic design,
animation, apparel/textile design, industrial design, web design, architecture, interior design and
fine arts. Techniques in traditional and digital illustration applications will be explored as directly
linked to ever changing social trends.

Pop Art
a. Write Art Revues of Andy Warhol and one of his artworks (20 pts.).
b.
Find a bottle, can, almost any item popular in culture appropriate for school
and create four thumbnails for compositional planning of an advertisement
for the product as if presenting a full page ad piece for a magazine (10 pts.).
c. Using markers, create the advertisement (9 x 12”) (50 pts.).
d. Present the advertisement in storyboard fashion to the class. (20 pts.)
Two Point Perspective
a. Write Art Revues about Frank Lloyd Wright and one of his artworks (20 pts.).
b. Choose an Old Town building, photograph and print it (20 pts.).
c. Draw it (11 x 14”) in pen & ink and prismacolor (100 pts.).
d. Write the building’s historical importance statement and print (10 pts.).
e. Mat artwork and statement (10 pts.).
Scratch Art
a. Write Art Revues about Francisco de Goya and one of his etched prints (20 pts.).
b. Take a black & white photograph of an animal with texture and print it (20 pts.).
c. Practice scratch art (10 pts.).
d. Create an (8 x 10”) scratch art of the animal (50 pts.)
e. Type & Print a description for the animal as if it were up for Adoption (10 pts.)
f. Mat artwork and statement (10 pts.).
Cartooning
a. Write Art Revues of Charles Schultz and one of his comic strips (20 pts.).
b. Create an original cartoon character (10 pts.).
c. Draw four thumbnail cells of cartoon plot in color (10 pts.).
d. Draw four (9 x 12”) cells in pen & ink & marker of cartoon plot (50 pts.).
e. Mount on storyboards (individual black posterboard) (10 pts.).
f. Present to class (20 pts.)

Self-Portrait
a. Write Art Revues of Chuck Close and one of his artworks.
b. I will Take your portrait photograph and print it
c. Create a value scale in ebony pencil, (20 1” grids with motif) (10 pts.).
d. Create Self-Portrait drawing in ebony pencil in Chuck Close Style (14 X 22”)
(100 pts.).
e. Write an artist’s statement about you, style and medium and print (10 pts.).
f. Mat Self-Portrait and statement (10 pts.).
Transformation
a. Write Art Revues of Claes Oldenberg and one of his artworks (20 pts.)
b. Create one full page color transformation thumbnail (object to alive in 5 stages
in environment) (10 pts.).
c. Create transformation (11 x 14”) artwork (50 pts.).
d. Write artist’s statement explaining this metamorphosis and print (10 pts).
e. Mat artwork and statement (10 pts.)
Collection (Personal set of 24 prismacolors recommended)
a. Write Art Revues of Richard Estes and one of his artworks (20 pts.).
b. Bring and photograph personal collection (10 pts.).
c. Create illustration of collection in prismacolor (100 pts.).
d. Write artist’s statement about collection and print (10 pts.).
e. Mat artwork and artist’s statement (10 pts.).
