Goal 1, Objective 1.4 Economic Development Baseline Data Updates - November 2010 Draft Objective 1.4: Align plans for the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degree programs, and the resources to support them, with the economic development needs of the region. Associate in Science Degree Programs: (Source: Falecia Williams, Workforce Development) Program Reviews Annual program viability, growth, and success reviews continue to be conducted. Beginning in 2010-11, five year program reviews will include be campus-based or collegewide, depending on the program, presentation, and feedback forums that will precede submission to the College Learning Council. (Both of the above are now available on-line in ATLAS under the Faculty Tab providing a more accessible and dynamic resource.) Industry Certification/Articulation Industry certifications for statewide articulation continue to be developed and are becoming more codified in programs where the industry demand warrants them as integral parts of the curriculum. Program Development An ongoing study is being conducted of workforce trends and analysis of economic development plans across major agencies within Valencia’s service district. Research on possible new Valencia A.S. programs is currently underway. A new Bachelors of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree in Software Development is under development with UCF funded through UCF National Science Foundation grant. A DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) session was conducted with strong industry participation. Enhanced Web Communications The A.S. degree programs are being promoted through enhanced web communications including videos and Facebook pages. Associate in Arts Degree Programs: (Source: Karen Borglum, Academic Affairs) The AA degree is aligned with economic development in the following ways: Curriculum Alignment Alignment of the General Education courses between the A.S./A.A.S./A.A. degrees support the development of pathways to a B.S./B.A. degree. A meeting was held with local partners (secondary, university) focusing on curriculum alignment in STEM focused careers. Pre-Majors New Pre-Majors were developed in: 1 Music Performance Articulated Pre-Major to UCF in Computer Science Articulated Pre-Major in Architecture with UCF (in process) Transfer The AA degree contributes to economic development by addressing transfer needs of students when specific majors are not a part of the Targeted Occupations List. 2
