Honorary Senior Clinical Lectureship (Non-University staff)
Guidance Notes
The GKT School of Medical Education invites applications for the award of Honorary Senior Clinical
Lectureships from non-University staff, who are consultants, GP principals or equivalent senior
healthcare professionals. Applicants must be engaged in the education and training of King’s medical
students. This award builds upon developments introduced by the General Medical Council to
professionalise and improve the quality of undergraduate medical education.
Criteria
Honorary Senior Clinical Lectureship will be conferred on an individual who:
•
Is a consultant, GP principal or equivalent senior healthcare professional (typically AfC
8 or above) working within a KHP Trust or another King’s associated trust, general
practice or other provider of clinical services; and
•
has contributed to the education of registered King’s medical students for at least 12
months; and
•
Will make a contribution to the education of registered King’s medical students of at
least 0.5 programmed activities per week or 80 hours per year
In addition to direct teaching and supervision of King’s medical students, the applicant should expect
to contribute to at least one of the following:
•
Admissions and interviewing
•
Guiding personal and professional development
•
Assessment e.g. OSCE examining, developing exam questions
•
Programme, course, phase, module, firm or site organisation and management
•
Programme, course or module development
All appointees are required to review their education contribution and performance as part of their
annual appraisal and to engage in continued professional development as an educator.
Application Process
There are three sections to the application form:
•
Section A - To be completed by the applicant and then discussed with either the
Director of Community Education (for GPs or equivalent senior healthcare
professionals) or the Trust Director of Medical Education/Lead for Undergraduate
Medical Education (for consultants or equivalent senior healthcare professionals).
•
Section B - To be completed by either the Director of Community Education (for GPs
or equivalent senior healthcare professionals) or the Trust Director of Medical
Education/Lead for Undergraduate Medical Education (for consultants or equivalent
senior healthcare professionals).
•
Section C - Applications are considered by the Dean of Medical Education or the
Associate Clinical Dean or the Vice Dean Academic Psychiatry (on behalf of the Dean
for Medical Education) and once approved are sent for processing to:

Duration of award
Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer titles will be conferred for an initial period of 5 years, and they may
be renewed. Titles conferred for education contribution may be withdrawn in the event of significant
shortfalls identified through appraisal or intervention from the Director of Community Education, the
Trust Director of Medical Education/Lead for Undergraduate Medical Education, Associate Clinical
Dean, Vice Dean Academic Psychiatry or the Dean of Medical Education.
